Key Details

Latin Name:
Common Name:
Flower Colour: Violet-Blue

Perovskia atriplicifolia Blue Spire

This stunning deciduous perennial brings airy elegance to summer borders with its tall spires of violet-blue flowers rising above aromatic silvery foliage. The upright architectural form and long flowering period make it invaluable for adding height and movement to planting schemes whilst attracting abundant pollinators.

Seasonal Highlights

Late summer through early autumn sees masses of violet-blue flower spikes creating a hazy purple cloud effect. The silvery-grey aromatic foliage provides interest from late spring onwards, while the silver-white stems add winter structure after flowering.

Key Features

  • Long flowering period in late summer
  • Aromatic silvery-grey foliage
  • Excellent pollinator plant
  • Drought tolerant once established
  • Upright architectural form

Perfect For

Outstanding in mixed borders, prairie-style plantings and gravel gardens. Perfect for adding height and vertical interest. Excellent in Mediterranean-style gardens and alongside roses. Ideal for hot, sunny positions and well-drained soils.

Growing Tips

Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. Thrives in poor to moderately fertile soil - avoid over-feeding which reduces flowering. Excellent drought tolerance once established. Cut back hard to 15-30cm in mid-spring to encourage strong new growth. Avoid autumn pruning.

Looks Great With

Stunning alongside ornamental grasses, rudbeckias and sedums. Complements silver-leaved plants like artemisia and stachys. The blue flowers contrast beautifully with yellow achillea, orange kniphofia and pink echinacea.

A superb choice for creating late-season colour whilst adding structure, fragrance and pollinator value with minimal maintenance.
