Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Blue Spire', commonly known as Russian sage, is a stunning semi-woody perennial celebrated for its tall, airy wands of violet-blue flowers and aromatic silver-grey foliage. From midsummer through to autumn, slender upright stems are clothed in tiny lavender-blue blooms that catch and hold the light, creating a hazy, smoke-like effect in the garden. The deeply cut, sage-scented leaves add texture and fragrance even when the plant is not in flower, making 'Blue Spire' a multi-season performer of the highest order. Tough, drought-tolerant and irresistible to bees and butterflies, it is an essential choice for naturalistic planting schemes, mixed borders and coastal gardens.
Growing conditions
Position: Russian sage thrives in a position in full sun. It performs best with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day and will become leggy and flower poorly in shade. An open, south- or west-facing aspect is ideal, and it is well suited to exposed or coastal sites where its wind-resistance and salt tolerance shine.
Soil: This plant demands excellent drainage above all else. It flourishes in poor to moderately fertile soils, including chalk, sandy or gravelly ground, and is highly tolerant of dry conditions once established. Rich, heavy or waterlogged soils should be avoided, as excessive moisture — particularly in winter — is the most common cause of failure. When planting, ensure any compacted or clay-heavy ground is improved with grit or horticultural sand to facilitate rapid drainage.
Care
Watering: Once established, Perovskia atriplicifolia 'Blue Spire' is exceptionally drought tolerant and requires very little supplemental watering. During the first growing season, water regularly to help the root system establish, then gradually reduce frequency. Mature plants need only occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.
Feeding: Russian sage does not require regular feeding and actively prefers lean conditions. Overly fertile soils or excessive feeding will encourage lush, floppy growth at the expense of flowers. A light top-dressing of balanced fertiliser in early spring, if the soil is very poor, is all that is needed.
Pruning: Hard pruning in early to mid spring, once the risk of severe frost has passed, is essential for maintaining a compact, well-shaped plant and promoting the strongest flowering. Cut all stems back hard to a low framework of woody growth — typically to within 10–15 cm of the base — just as fresh buds begin to break. Avoid cutting back into completely dead or old wood. Do not cut back in autumn; the upright stems provide structural winter interest and help protect the crown from frost. Deadheading is not necessary, as the spent flower spikes remain attractive well into winter.
Pests and diseases: 'Blue Spire' is largely trouble-free. Its aromatic foliage deters most common garden pests, and it has good natural resistance to disease. The greatest risk is root rot in poorly drained or overwet soils, which is best avoided by ensuring appropriate site preparation at planting time.
