Papaver ‘Raspberry Queen’ – A Soft, Elegant Touch of Pink and Red

Papaver ‘Raspberry Queen’ is a charming perennial poppy known for its delicate yet striking blooms in shades of soft raspberry pink, creating a serene and graceful presence in the garden. The large, papery petals feature a stunning raspberry hue with darker veins, giving each bloom a vibrant and textured appearance. The dark central stamens provide a beautiful contrast, further enhancing the flower’s allure. ‘Raspberry Queen’ blooms in late spring to early summer, adding both color and elegance to borders, cottage gardens, and floral arrangements.

Why Grow Papaver ‘Raspberry Queen’?

  • Soft Raspberry-Pink Blooms – Large, soft pink flowers with raspberry undertones and darker veins provide a romantic and elegant look.
  • Striking Dark Centers – The contrast of dark stamens against the light petals creates visual interest and depth.
  • Long-Lasting Blooms‘Raspberry Queen’ flowers in late spring to early summer, offering a graceful display throughout the season.
  • Low Maintenance – A hardy, low-care poppy that offers bold beauty with minimal effort once established.
  • Attracts Pollinators – Bees and butterflies are drawn to the soft yet vibrant blooms, making this poppy a wonderful choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.

Height of Plant

Papaver ‘Raspberry Queen’ typically grows to a height of 75–90 cm, making it an excellent choice for the middle to back of borders or for adding height to mixed garden beds.

Where to Site Your Papaver ‘Raspberry Queen’

This poppy prefers full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. It’s an ideal choice for planting in the middle or back of perennial borders, as well as in naturalized or wildflower meadows. ‘Raspberry Queen’ pairs beautifully with other pastel-toned perennials like Lavender, Shasta Daisies, and Foxgloves for a soft and romantic garden aesthetic. For added contrast, plant alongside bold colors such as Echinacea or Salvia, which will highlight the delicate beauty of the raspberry-pink blooms.

How to Grow and Care for Your Papaver ‘Raspberry Queen’

  • Soil – Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid overly rich or wet soils, as they may lead to root rot.
  • Light – Grows best in full sun, which brings out the best in its vibrant blooms.
  • Watering – Poppies are drought-tolerant once established but should be watered regularly during the first year to promote strong root growth. Avoid overwatering and ensure the soil drains well.

Maintenance:

  • Deadheading – To maintain a tidy appearance, remove spent blooms regularly. This will also encourage additional flowers.
  • Pruning – After flowering, cut back the plant to ground level to encourage new growth and to prevent disease.
  • Dividing – Poppies rarely need dividing but can be divided in early fall if they become overcrowded or too large.
  • Winter Care – Mulch around the base of the plant in colder climates to protect the roots from frost during the winter months.
