How to Grow and Care for Your Papaver ‘Raspberry Queen’
- Soil – Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid overly rich or wet soils, as they may lead to root rot.
- Light – Grows best in full sun, which brings out the best in its vibrant blooms.
- Watering – Poppies are drought-tolerant once established but should be watered regularly during the first year to promote strong root growth. Avoid overwatering and ensure the soil drains well.
Maintenance:
- Deadheading – To maintain a tidy appearance, remove spent blooms regularly. This will also encourage additional flowers.
- Pruning – After flowering, cut back the plant to ground level to encourage new growth and to prevent disease.
- Dividing – Poppies rarely need dividing but can be divided in early fall if they become overcrowded or too large.
- Winter Care – Mulch around the base of the plant in colder climates to protect the roots from frost during the winter months.
