About Osmanthus Burkwoodii Specimen 140-160cm Delivery November

Osmanthus × burkwoodii – Burkwood Osmanthus

Osmanthus × burkwoodii, commonly known as Burkwood Osmanthus, is a first-rate evergreen shrub prized for its dense, glossy dark green foliage and exquisitely fragrant white flowers in spring. Naturally compact and slow-growing, it brings reliable year-round structure, deep evergreen colour, and outstanding seasonal scent to gardens of every style and size.

Whether planted as a formal hedge, a structural specimen, or a fragrant addition to a mixed border, this hardy, low-maintenance shrub rewards with consistent beauty and minimal fuss.

Habit & Appearance

Foliage and form. Burkwood Osmanthus forms a neat, rounded, bushy shrub with a naturally dense, upright-spreading habit. The small, oval leaves are a deep, lustrous dark green with finely toothed margins, holding their rich colour and gloss through every season. This evergreen quality makes it an excellent backbone plant in the garden, maintaining structure and interest long after other shrubs have died back.

Flowers. In mid to late spring, the shrub is smothered in clusters of tiny, tubular white flowers that carry an intensely sweet, jasmine-like fragrance. The scent is particularly pronounced on still, warm days and can perfume a large area of garden. Flowers are also attractive to bees and other early pollinators, adding ecological value alongside their ornamental charm.

Growing Conditions

Position. Thrives in full sun to partial shade. While it tolerates shadier spots well, flowering is most prolific in a sunny or lightly shaded position. It is fully hardy across the UK, coping reliably with frost, exposed sites, and urban pollution, making it a robust choice in a wide range of garden settings.

Soil. Grows well in most well-drained soils, including chalk, loam, and clay, provided conditions are not waterlogged. It is adaptable and undemanding, settling into the majority of garden soils without difficulty. When planting, incorporating organic matter will help establishment, particularly on lighter or poorer soils.

Care

Watering. Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong root system. Once settled, Burkwood Osmanthus is notably drought-tolerant and requires little supplementary watering under normal UK conditions.

Pruning. One of the great virtues of this shrub is its naturally tidy habit, which requires very little intervention. If grown as a specimen, little or no pruning is needed beyond the removal of any wayward or damaged stems. For hedging or formal shapes, trim lightly immediately after flowering in late spring to preserve the following year's flower buds and maintain a crisp outline. Established plants can also be cut back more hard if rejuvenation is needed, as they respond well to renovation pruning.

Feeding. An annual top-dressing of a balanced general fertiliser in spring will support healthy growth and flowering, though established plants in reasonable soil will perform well without regular feeding.

Garden Uses

Versatile and reliable. Burkwood Osmanthus is equally at home as a formal or informal hedge, providing year-round privacy with the bonus of exceptional spring fragrance. It works beautifully as a structural specimen in a lawn or border, or as an evergreen anchor in a mixed planting. Position it near seating areas, paths, or entrances to make the most of its outstanding scent. It also combines superbly with spring bulbs, early-flowering perennials such as hellebores, and other flowering shrubs including camellias and magnolias, whose blooms are set off beautifully against its deep green foliage.

Dependable, fragrant, and deeply attractive through every month of the year, Osmanthus × burkwoodii is a shrub that earns its place in virtually any garden.
