Osmanthus Burkwoodii

Osmanthus × burkwoodii – Fragrant Evergreen Elegance for Every Garden

Osmanthus × burkwoodii, commonly known as Burkwood Osmanthus, is a refined evergreen shrub celebrated for its glossy, deep green foliage and intensely fragrant white flowers in spring. Compact, dense, and beautifully formed, it brings year-round structure, texture, and scent to gardens large and small.

This versatile, low-maintenance shrub is ideal for hedging, borders, or standalone specimens, combining reliability with ornamental appeal and seasonal fragrance.

Why Grow Osmanthus × burkwoodii?

1. Intensely Fragrant Spring Flowers
Clusters of small, white, starry flowers appear in April and May, filling the air with a sweet, jasmine-like fragrance that attracts bees and pollinators.

2. Evergreen Structure All Year
Neat, oval, glossy leaves provide a permanent, dark green backdrop for other plants and maintain structure and colour through all seasons.

3. Dense, Compact Habit
Naturally bushy and slow-growing, Osmanthus × burkwoodii forms a tidy, rounded shrub without extensive pruning, making it ideal for low-maintenance gardens.

4. Highly Versatile
Equally effective as a fragrant hedge, a structural evergreen in borders, or a container plant near seating areas and entrances.

5. Hardy & Reliable
Fully hardy across the UK, wind-tolerant, and resilient in a range of soil types, this is a tough yet elegant choice for almost any garden.

How to Grow Osmanthus × burkwoodii

Position:
Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Flowering is strongest in sunnier positions, but it tolerates shade well.

Soil:
Prefers well-drained, fertile soil, but adaptable to most soil types, including chalk and clay.

Watering:
Water regularly during the first season. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires little attention.

Pruning:
Minimal pruning needed. Trim lightly after flowering to maintain shape or rejuvenate older plants.

Growth Habit:
A dense, rounded evergreen shrub, typically 1.5–2.5 m tall and wide. Slow-growing and easy to manage.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy across the UK (H5). Tolerates frost, wind, and urban conditions.

Design Ideas

  • Plant as a fragrant evergreen hedge along paths or seating areas.

  • Use as a backbone shrub in mixed borders for year-round structure.

  • Grow in containers near doors and patios to enjoy its spring scent.

  • Combine with spring bulbs or flowering shrubs for a seasonal display.

Final Thought

With its rich evergreen foliage, exquisite spring fragrance, and easy-going nature, Osmanthus × burkwoodii is a timeless addition to any garden. Whether used as a hedge, specimen, or structural planting, it delivers beauty, scent, and reliability all year round.
