Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' – Black Mondo Grass

Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens', commonly known as Black Mondo Grass, is one of the most distinctive evergreen perennials available, prized for its extraordinary arching, strap-like leaves in an intense, near-black purple. Forming tidy, slowly spreading clumps, it brings a bold, graphic quality to planting schemes, making it equally at home in contemporary borders, gravel gardens and container displays. In summer, slender stems carry small pale pink or lilac flowers just above the foliage, followed by glossy dark berries that persist into autumn, adding quiet seasonal charm to its year-round drama.

Habit & Appearance

Foliage:
The arching, strap-shaped leaves emerge in deep purple-black tones and hold their extraordinary colour throughout all four seasons. Unlike many dark-leaved plants, the blackness of 'Nigrescens' is genuine and consistent, deepening rather than fading as the plant matures. The clumps are neat and compact, building gradually into dense, weed-suppressing mats of foliage.

Flowers & Berries:
In midsummer, short racemes of small pale pink to soft lilac flowers rise modestly above the leaves. These are followed in autumn by clusters of glossy, blue-black berries that provide additional ornamental interest and extend the plant's appeal well into winter.

Form:
Low-growing and clump-forming, Black Mondo Grass is a slow to moderate grower that builds steadily over time. It is an ideal plant for edging paths, underplanting deciduous or evergreen shrubs, and creating striking colour contrasts at the front of a border or in a pot.

Growing Conditions

Position:
Thrives in full sun through to partial shade. A bright position with some shelter from harsh, drying winds encourages the richest leaf colour and the most vigorous growth. It performs especially well when planted where sunlight can catch the dark foliage, emphasising its depth and intensity.

Soil:
Best in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. It will tolerate a range of soil types, including heavier clay if drainage is reasonably good, but prolonged waterlogging should be avoided. Adding organic matter at planting will help retain moisture while keeping the root zone free-draining.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy throughout the UK, tolerating temperatures down to approximately -15°C. Evergreen foliage persists through winter, providing year-round structural interest even in cold conditions.

Care & Maintenance

General care:
Black Mondo Grass is a low-maintenance plant once established. It requires very little intervention to look its best, making it an excellent choice for busy gardeners or low-input planting schemes.

Tidying:
In early spring, remove any tired, tatty or winter-damaged leaves by gently pulling or cutting them away at the base to allow fresh growth to emerge cleanly. Avoid cutting back all foliage hard, as the plant is evergreen and retains much of its foliage in good condition through winter.

Dividing:
Clumps can be divided every three to four years in spring to maintain vigour and spread the plant to new areas of the garden. Lift and carefully separate rooted sections, replanting at the same depth and watering in well.

Watering & feeding:
Water regularly during dry spells in the first growing season after planting to help the plant establish. Once settled, it is reasonably drought-tolerant. An application of balanced general fertiliser in spring will support healthy growth, though feeding requirements are modest.

Suggested Uses

Contemporary & urban gardens:
The graphic, near-black foliage pairs superbly with architectural plants, pale gravel, steel and stone, making it a favourite in modern and minimalist garden design.

Gravel & rock gardens:
Its tolerance of well-drained conditions and its compact habit make it ideal for planting among pebbles and rocks, where the dark foliage creates striking contrast against pale stone.

Shaded and woodland borders:
One of very few genuinely dark-leaved plants to perform well in shade, 'Nigrescens' is invaluable for lifting shady corners and underplanting trees and shrubs.

Containers & patio displays:
Excellent in pots, either alone as a bold specimen or combined with silver, gold or pale green foliage plants to maximise the contrast effect.

Why Grow Black Mondo Grass?

Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' is a genuinely unique garden plant — one of the very few that offers true near-black foliage maintained in full colour throughout the year. Compact, hardy, low-maintenance and versatile across a wide range of positions and planting styles, it earns its place in any garden seeking year-round structure, contrast and understated drama. Whether used as edging, groundcover or a container specimen, Black Mondo Grass is a plant that consistently rewards with its extraordinary, jewel-like presence.
