Olea europaea – The Olive Tree

Habit & Appearance
Evergreen structure with year-round appeal. Olea europaea is a slow-growing evergreen tree with a naturally rounded, spreading habit. Its narrow, lance-shaped leaves are a distinctive silvery-green on top and pale grey-silver beneath, catching the light beautifully and shimmering softly in a breeze. Over time, the trunk develops wonderful texture and character, becoming gnarled and rugged in appearance — a quality that only adds to its charm and sense of age.
Flowers and fruit. In warm summers, small, creamy-white flowers appear in loose clusters, delicately fragrant and attractive to pollinators. In particularly hot, sunny seasons, these may be followed by the formation of decorative olive fruits, ripening from green to deep purple-black. While fruiting is not guaranteed in the UK climate, the foliage and form alone make this an exceptional garden plant in any season.

Growing Conditions
Position. Olea europaea thrives in a position of full sun. It requires as much direct sunlight as possible to grow well and perform at its best, making south- or west-facing aspects ideal. A sheltered location is strongly recommended in the UK, particularly in colder or more exposed regions, as protection from harsh winds and prolonged frost will help the tree establish and flourish.
Soil. Well-drained soil is absolutely essential. The Olive tree will not tolerate waterlogged or overly wet conditions and is far more likely to suffer from excess moisture than from drought. It performs well in light, gritty, or sandy soils and adapts readily to alkaline and neutral pH. When growing in containers, use a free-draining, gritty loam-based compost and always ensure excellent drainage at the base of the pot.
Hardiness. Olive trees are hardy in most parts of the UK, particularly in southern, coastal, and urban areas where temperatures remain milder. In colder regions or during prolonged severe frost, some protection — such as fleece wrapping or moving containerised plants under cover — is advisable. Established trees in sheltered spots are generally more resilient than young or recently planted specimens.
Drought tolerance. Once established, Olea europaea is impressively drought tolerant, making it a superb choice for dry, sunny gardens and coastal settings where other plants may struggle.
Care & Pruning
Watering. During the growing season, water regularly — particularly trees grown in containers, which can dry out quickly in warm weather. Allow the compost or soil to partially dry between waterings and always ensure excess water can drain freely. In winter, reduce watering significantly, as the tree requires very little moisture during its dormant period and is most vulnerable to root rot in cold, wet conditions.
Feeding. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and foliage colour. Container-grown trees benefit from a liquid feed every few weeks during the growing season to compensate for nutrients lost through regular watering.
Pruning. The Olive tree responds well to pruning and can be shaped and maintained with ease. Prune lightly in late spring or early summer, once the risk of frost has passed, to maintain your desired form and remove any crossing, dead, or congested branches. Olives are tolerant of harder pruning if renovation or reshaping is needed, though for most established trees, a light, annual tidy is all that is required. Avoid pruning in cold or frosty conditions.
Repotting. Container-grown Olives should be repotted every two to three years, or when they become visibly root-bound, into a slightly larger pot with fresh, gritty compost.
