Nandina domestica 'Obsessed'

Bold, brilliant, and perpetually colourful, Nandina domestica 'Obsessed' is a standout evergreen shrub that earns its name with a near-constant display of vivid red foliage. Often called heavenly bamboo (though not a true bamboo), this striking variety takes the genus's renowned seasonal colour to another level, holding intense crimson and scarlet tones throughout much of the year rather than saving them just for winter.

New growth emerges in rich shades of red and copper, deepening to a lustrous, jewel-like crimson as the season progresses. Even in the warmer months, 'Obsessed' retains far more red pigmentation than most Nandina varieties, giving it a year-round vibrancy that few shrubs can match. As temperatures drop in autumn and winter, the colour intensifies further still, producing some of its most spectacular tones when the garden needs them most.

Forming a neat, upright, and clump-forming habit, 'Obsessed' is naturally tidy and rarely becomes leggy or untidy. Its fine, lacy, pinnate leaves bring a soft and delicate texture that contrasts wonderfully with bolder, broader-leaved plants, while in summer small clusters of white starry flowers may appear. It is an excellent choice for containers, courtyard gardens, mixed borders, or low hedging, and delivers exceptional all-season impact with very little effort.

Growing conditions

Position: Full sun to partial shade. Best foliage colour — deepest reds and most vivid tones — is achieved in a sunny, open position. It will tolerate some shade but may display less intense colour in lower light.

Soil: Fertile, moist but well-drained soil is ideal. 'Obsessed' is adaptable and will tolerate a range of soil types once established, including moderately dry conditions. Avoid waterlogged or heavily compacted ground.

Aspect: Hardy across most of the UK, though best sited in a reasonably sheltered spot, away from harsh, desiccating winds that can scorch the delicate foliage in winter. In colder or more exposed gardens, a south- or west-facing position is preferable.

Care

Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong root system. Once settled in, 'Obsessed' becomes considerably more drought-tolerant, though it will benefit from occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

Feeding: Apply a balanced general-purpose fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage. A mulch of well-rotted compost around the base in spring will help retain moisture and improve soil quality over time.

Pruning: Very little pruning is needed. 'Obsessed' maintains a naturally compact and tidy form without regular intervention. If any shaping is required, prune lightly in spring, cutting selected older stems back to the base to encourage fresh, colourful new growth. Avoid heavy cutting back, as Nandina responds best to gentle, selective pruning.
