Nandina domestica 'Lemon Lime'

Bright, cheerful, and evergreen, Nandina domestica 'Lemon Lime' is a standout variety of heavenly bamboo that brings a fresh, luminous quality to the garden throughout the year. Often called heavenly bamboo (though not a true bamboo), this compact and eye-catching shrub is prized for its vivid, lime-green foliage and its ability to maintain colour and interest across every season.

New growth emerges in bold shades of chartreuse and golden yellow, creating a striking contrast against more sombre evergreens. As the seasons progress, the foliage mellows to a fresh apple-green in summer, before warming to shades of orange, coral, and soft red as temperatures drop in autumn and winter. The result is a constantly evolving display that keeps the garden alive with colour even in the quietest months.

Its finely divided, lacy leaves give 'Lemon Lime' a soft, feathery texture that brings lightness and movement to planting schemes. The naturally compact, mounded habit means it holds its shape beautifully without constant intervention, making it as practical as it is ornamental. Perfect for containers, low borders, or mixed planting beds, this variety is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking year-round colour with minimal fuss.

Growing conditions

Position: Full sun to partial shade. The brightest lime and gold foliage tones develop most vividly in a sunny spot, though 'Lemon Lime' will perform well in dappled shade too.

Soil: Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Once established, it tolerates a reasonably wide range of soil types, including slightly acidic or neutral conditions. Avoid waterlogged ground.

Aspect: Hardy in most UK climates. For best results, choose a sheltered position that protects the foliage from harsh, drying winds, particularly in exposed gardens during winter.

Care

Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong root system. Once settled in, 'Lemon Lime' becomes notably more drought-tolerant, though it will appreciate occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and maintain the vibrancy of the foliage. A mulch of organic matter around the base will help retain moisture and improve soil structure over time.

Pruning: Very little pruning is required, as 'Lemon Lime' naturally forms a neat, rounded mound. If any tidying is needed, remove the oldest stems at the base in early spring to encourage fresh, vigorous new growth. Avoid hard cutting back, as the plant performs best when left to develop its natural shape.
