Hairawn muhly grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) is a breathtaking native ornamental grass that puts on one of the most spectacular floral displays of any grass in cultivation. From late summer through autumn, a dense mound of fine, arching, deep green foliage is transformed by a billowing haze of rose-pink to magenta flower plumes that seem to float in the air like a rosy cloud. Even after the flowers fade, the seedheads persist well into winter, adding soft copper tones to the garden. A true showstopper in any landscape, it is equally at home in naturalistic plantings, coastal gardens, and contemporary borders.

Habit and appearance

Graceful, fine-textured foliage. Hairawn muhly grass forms a neat, rounded clump of narrow, dark green, arching leaves that have an elegant, almost hair-like delicacy. The overall habit is tidy and architectural throughout the growing season, making it a valuable foliage plant even before the flowers appear.

Spectacular autumn flowering. The real drama arrives in late summer to autumn when the plant sends up a profusion of airy panicles in vivid shades of rose-pink, magenta, and purple. These cloud-like plumes can extend well above the leaf mound, creating a striking mass effect that is particularly stunning when planted in groups or drifts and backlit by low autumn sun.

Growing conditions

A lover of warmth and sun. Muhlenbergia capillaris thrives in a position that receives full sun for the majority of the day. It is tolerant of hot, exposed sites and performs best where summers are warm. It is suitable for coastal and inland gardens alike, coping well with wind and salt-laden air.

Well-drained soils preferred. This grass is remarkably adaptable to a wide range of soil types, including sandy, gravelly, or poor soils, provided drainage is good. It has excellent drought tolerance once established and does not appreciate sitting in waterlogged or overly fertile ground, which can cause the clumps to open up and flop. It will also grow in clay soils of moderate drainage.

Care

Low maintenance once established. Hairawn muhly grass is one of the easier ornamental grasses to care for. Once settled in, it requires little supplementary watering and is largely self-sufficient. Avoid overwatering or excessive fertilising, as this encourages lush but floppy growth at the expense of the ornamental flower display.

Pruning and tidying. Leave the spent flower plumes and foliage in place over winter, as they continue to add interest and provide habitat for beneficial insects and birds. In late winter to early spring, before new growth begins, cut the entire clump back hard — to within approximately 10–15 cm of the ground. This annual cut encourages a fresh flush of foliage and the best possible flowering performance for the coming season.

Pests and diseases. Muhlenbergia capillaris is notably resistant to pests and diseases and rarely requires any intervention. It is also generally deer resistant, making it an excellent choice for gardens in areas where browsing animals are a concern.
