How to Grow and Care for Your Lupinus ‘The Chandelier’
-
Soil – Prefers well-drained, rich soil that is slightly acidic to neutral and amended with organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. This will ensure the plant has the nutrients it needs to thrive.
-
Light – Grows best in full sun, where it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It can tolerate light shade but will produce fewer flowers in shaded conditions.
-
Watering – Water regularly, particularly during dry spells, to keep the soil evenly moist. Ensure the soil is well-drained, as lupines are sensitive to waterlogged conditions.
Maintenance:
-
Mulch & Feed – Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Fertilize with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at the start of the growing season to promote strong growth and abundant blooms.
-
Deadheading & Cleanup – Regularly deadhead spent flower spikes to encourage a longer blooming period and keep the plant looking tidy. Once the blooming season is over, cut the plant back to the base to promote fresh growth for the following year.
-
Support & Staking – Due to its tall, upright form, ‘The Chandelier’ may need staking or support to prevent the flower spikes from toppling over in windy conditions. Use soft ties to secure the plant without damaging it.
-
Division – Divide every 3-4 years to maintain plant vigor and prevent overcrowding. The best time to divide is in early spring or fall, when the plant is not actively blooming.
