Leylandii Hedging – Excalibur Gold
Brighten your garden boundaries with the vibrant and fast-growing Leylandii 'Excalibur Gold'. This striking variety of Leyland Cypress offers a unique golden-yellow hue that adds year-round interest and a touch of brightness to any landscape. Perfect for privacy screening, wind protection or creating structure in your garden, Excalibur Gold brings both beauty and practicality in equal measure.
The key attraction of Excalibur Gold is its vivid golden new growth, which contrasts beautifully against older, deeper green foliage. The colour is most intense when grown in full sun, making it a standout feature even in winter. This golden Leylandii grows quickly—up to 75–90cm (2.5–3ft) per year—making it an ideal choice for those seeking fast, effective hedging. With regular trimming, it can easily be kept to your preferred height and width, forming a dense, neat screen in just a couple of seasons.
Unlike many hedging varieties, Excalibur Gold remains evergreen all year, ensuring your garden looks lively even in the colder months. It also provides excellent shelter for birds and small wildlife, enhancing the biodiversity of your space. While fast-growing, it’s also hardy and low maintenance once established.
Plant Excalibur Gold in a sunny to partially shaded spot for best results. It thrives in most well-drained soils, including chalk, clay and loam, though very wet ground should be avoided. For a full, dense hedge, space plants 60–75cm apart. Water regularly during the first year, particularly in dry spells, and consider applying a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage lush growth and vibrant colouring.
When it comes to pruning, a light trim once or twice a year—typically in spring and again in late summer—is all that’s needed to maintain shape. Avoid cutting into old wood, as this can reduce regrowth. Shaping the hedge so it’s slightly narrower at the top will also allow light to reach the lower branches, helping maintain foliage all the way down.
This variety is perfect for a range of uses: screening off neighbours, dividing spaces within the garden, reducing wind exposure, or simply adding a burst of colour to your backdrop. It can grow up to 5–7 metres if left untrimmed but is easily managed with regular care.
Leylandii 'Excalibur Gold' is a brilliant choice for gardeners who want instant impact, dependable coverage, and a touch of golden charm. With just a bit of attention in the early stages, it will reward you for years to come.
