Lavandula angustifolia ‘Romance White’ – A Pure and Fragrant Accent for Cottage and Contemporary Gardens
Lavandula angustifolia ‘Romance White’ is a charming, compact variety of English lavender that enchants with soft white flower spikes and aromatic silver-green foliage. Flowering from early to mid-summer, this elegant cultivar brings a serene, calming presence to garden borders, gravel gardens, and containers. Its neat, rounded habit and pristine blooms make it especially appealing in both formal and informal settings. As with all English lavenders, ‘Romance White’ is beloved by pollinators, drought-tolerant once established, and ideal for low-maintenance, sun-filled gardens.
Why Grow Lavender ‘Romance White’?
Elegant White Spikes – Clean, crisp white flower heads offer a refined contrast to traditional purple varieties, creating a soft and sophisticated look in any planting scheme.
Compact & Bushy Habit – Growing into a neat, rounded mound, ‘Romance White’ is perfect for front-of-border planting, edging paths, or growing in containers where space is limited.
Ultimate Height & Spread: 0.1 - 0.5m
Highly Fragrant – The grey-green foliage and delicate flowers exude a sweet, classic lavender fragrance that enhances garden ambience and makes excellent cut or dried flowers.
Pollinator Magnet – Bees and butterflies are drawn to its nectar-rich blooms, making it an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
Drought-Tolerant & Easy Care – Once established, this hardy perennial thrives in dry, sunny spots with minimal watering, making it ideal for Mediterranean, coastal, or gravel-style plantings.
Planting & Care Guide
Position: Prefers full sun and a warm, sheltered location. Ideal for borders, banks, rockeries, or containers placed in sunny spots.
Soil: Requires free-draining soil—chalky, sandy, or loamy—with a neutral to alkaline pH. Avoid heavy, wet soils that may cause root rot.
Watering: Water well until established, then only occasionally during prolonged dry periods. Overwatering should be avoided.
Maintenance:
-
Trim lightly after flowering to maintain a compact shape, but avoid cutting into old wood.
-
In early spring, remove any dead or winter-damaged growth to rejuvenate the plant.
-
Replace older plants every few years if they become woody or sparse in the centre.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Lavender ‘Romance White’ shines when planted alongside soft, pastel perennials like Nepeta, Salvia nemorosa, or Gaura, where its white blooms offer a cooling contrast. Pair it with silver-leaved companions such as Artemisia, Stachys byzantina, or Eryngium for a harmonious Mediterranean palette. In containers, mix with low-growing herbs like Thyme or Oregano, or set against Buxus or Euonymus ‘Green Spire’ for a formal look softened by fragrance and movement.
