Ilex aquifolium – The Classic Common Holly

A Timeless British Native with Glossy Evergreen Foliage and Jewel-Bright Winter Berries

Ilex aquifolium, the Common Holly, is one of Britain's most iconic native evergreens — a plant as deeply woven into the landscape as it is into tradition. With its rich, glossy dark green leaves edged in sharp spines, dense upright habit, and the promise of vivid red berries through autumn and winter, it brings enduring structure and seasonal spectacle to almost any garden setting. Whether grown as a stately specimen, a formal clipped hedge, or left to develop naturally as a large shrub or small tree, Common Holly earns its place in the garden every month of the year.

In spring, clusters of small, sweetly scented white flowers appear among the foliage, attracting bees and other early pollinators. Female plants follow with berries that ripen to a brilliant scarlet by autumn, persisting well into winter and providing a vital food source for birds such as thrushes and redwings. For reliable berry production, a male holly should be planted within reasonable proximity to pollinate female plants — though many gardens will already have a suitable pollinator nearby.

Habit and appearance

A bold, architectural evergreen. Common Holly develops a naturally upright, conical to broadly columnar form, becoming increasingly dense with age. The leaves are a deep, lustrous green on their upper surface, paler beneath, with wavy margins armed with sharp spiny teeth — though foliage higher up on mature plants often becomes less spiny over time. Growth is steady rather than fast, building into a substantial shrub or small tree that can eventually reach considerable height if left unpruned, though it responds extremely well to clipping and can be maintained at almost any size.

Berries and seasonal interest. The bright red berries are among the most recognisable features of the British winter garden. Appearing from autumn onwards, they cluster along the stems against the dark foliage, providing bold colour at a time when little else competes. The berries are toxic to humans and should be treated with care around young children, but are an invaluable wildlife resource through the colder months.

Growing conditions

Position. Ilex aquifolium is highly adaptable and will thrive in full sun or partial to deep shade. It is one of relatively few shrubs that performs genuinely well in difficult shaded positions, including under tree canopy, though berry production is typically more generous in a sunnier aspect. It is also tolerant of exposed sites and coastal conditions, making it a versatile choice for challenging locations.

Soil. Common Holly is unfussy about soil type and will establish well in most fertile, reasonably well-drained soils, including clay, loam, and sandy ground. It prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH but tolerates a wider range. Avoid permanently waterlogged soils, which can cause root problems over time. Once established, it is notably drought-tolerant and largely self-sufficient.

Hardiness. Fully hardy throughout the British Isles and much of northern Europe. Common Holly is exceptionally robust and long-lived, with mature specimens known to persist for many decades.

Care

Establishment. Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant develop a strong root system, particularly in dry spells. A mulch of bark or garden compost applied around the base after planting will help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots.

Pruning. For hedging or formal shapes, clip in late summer — typically August — once the main flush of growth has hardened. This timing avoids disturbing nesting birds and allows the plant to settle before winter. A second light trim can be given in spring if needed. For specimens grown more freely, little or no pruning is required; simply remove any dead, damaged, or wayward growth in late winter or early spring. Holly tolerates hard renovation pruning well if an older specimen needs rejuvenating.

Feeding. Established plants in reasonable soil require no routine feeding. On poorer soils, a balanced general fertiliser applied in spring can support healthy growth and foliage colour.

Wildlife value. Common Holly is one of the most wildlife-friendly shrubs available for British gardens. Its flowers support early bees, its dense evergreen canopy provides nesting and roosting cover for birds throughout the year, and its berries sustain winter-visiting thrushes, fieldfares, and resident blackbirds when food is scarce. Planting a holly is one of the most effective contributions a gardener can make to local biodiversity.
