Hypericum 'Hidcote' – A Classic, Free-Flowering Shrub with Bold Golden-Yellow Blooms

Hypericum 'Hidcote', commonly known as St John's Wort, is one of the most popular and reliable flowering shrubs available to gardeners today. Celebrated for its exceptionally large, saucer-shaped golden-yellow flowers and long blooming season stretching from midsummer well into autumn, 'Hidcote' brings sustained colour and warmth to any planting scheme. Its semi-evergreen, lance-shaped dark green foliage forms a dense, rounded mound that remains attractive throughout the year, providing a handsome backdrop to the bright blooms. Tough, adaptable, and remarkably easy to grow, Hypericum 'Hidcote' is an outstanding choice for borders, informal hedging, and low-maintenance planting schemes alike.

Why Grow Hypericum 'Hidcote'?

Spectacular, Long-Lasting Blooms – 'Hidcote' produces an impressive succession of large, five-petalled golden-yellow flowers, each with a striking central boss of prominent stamens. Flowering from July through to October, it delivers one of the longest seasons of any flowering shrub, ensuring your garden stays vibrant throughout summer and into the cooler months.

Dense, Rounded Habit – With its naturally tidy, dome-shaped growth habit, 'Hidcote' requires very little intervention to look its best. It works superbly as a specimen plant, as informal low hedging, or massed together in borders for a striking display of colour.

Semi-Evergreen Foliage – The rich, dark green lance-shaped leaves are retained well into winter in milder conditions, providing structure and year-round interest even after flowering has finished. This makes 'Hidcote' a genuinely multi-season plant in the garden.

Pollinator-Friendly – The open, cup-shaped flowers are highly attractive to bees, hoverflies, and butterflies, making 'Hidcote' a valuable addition to any wildlife-friendly or pollinator-supportive planting scheme.

Tough & Adaptable – Fully hardy across the United Kingdom, 'Hidcote' tolerates a wide range of conditions including coastal exposure, urban pollution, and periods of drought once established. Its resilience makes it an ideal choice for gardeners of all experience levels.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. For the most abundant flowering, choose a bright, open position where the plant receives several hours of direct sunlight each day. It will still perform well in partial shade, though flowering may be slightly less prolific.

Soil: Tolerant of most well-drained soil types, from sandy and chalky to moderately fertile loam. It performs best in soil that does not become waterlogged, as consistently wet roots can lead to poor growth. It is adaptable to both slightly acidic and alkaline conditions.

Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong root system. Once settled in, 'Hidcote' is moderately drought-tolerant, though watering during prolonged dry spells will help maintain vigour and support continued flowering.

Maintenance:

Pruning is best carried out in early to mid spring, cutting stems back hard to a low framework of shoots. This encourages vigorous new growth, maintains a compact and tidy shape, and promotes the best flowering performance for the coming season. Without regular pruning, plants can become leggy over time.

Deadheading spent flowers during the blooming season can encourage the plant to continue producing new blooms, though 'Hidcote' is naturally free-flowering and will often rebloom readily without intervention.

Fertilising with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring as new growth begins will support healthy foliage and a generous flush of flowers. This is particularly beneficial for plants growing in poorer or sandier soils.

Mulching around the base of the plant in spring or autumn helps to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the root zone during colder spells, contributing to the long-term health and vigour of the shrub.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Hypericum 'Hidcote' combines beautifully with other late-summer flowering shrubs and perennials. Pair it with Lavender or Perovskia for a stunning contrast of golden yellow against cool blue-purple tones. Its bright blooms work equally well alongside the warm oranges and reds of Rudbeckia, Helenium, or Crocosmia in a hot-coloured border scheme. For a softer, naturalistic look, plant alongside ornamental grasses such as Stipa or Pennisetum, whose feathery plumes complement the shrub's dense mounding habit. 'Hidcote' also makes an excellent informal hedge when planted in a row, and works well as a low-growing backdrop to shorter perennial planting in mixed borders.
