Habit & Appearance
Structure & Form: Hedera helix is a vigorous, woody-stemmed evergreen that grows in two distinct phases. In its juvenile stage it produces the familiar lobed leaves and climbing or trailing stems, self-adhering to surfaces via small aerial rootlets. On reaching the top of a support or in open ground, it can develop into a bushy, arching adult form with unlobed leaves and flowering stems. As a climber it will scale walls, fences, tree trunks and rocky outcrops; as a ground cover it spreads to form a dense, weed-suppressing mat. The foliage is leathery, glossy and deep green, providing a rich textural backdrop throughout every season.

Growing Conditions
Position: Hedera helix is exceptionally adaptable and will thrive in full shade, partial shade or even moderate sun. It is one of the best choices for north-facing aspects and deeply shaded areas where other plants struggle. In sunnier positions the foliage remains attractive, though the plant may require a little more moisture during dry spells.
Soil: Tolerant of a very wide range of soil types, including dry, compacted or root-filled ground that proves inhospitable to most plants. It prefers reasonably fertile, well-drained soil but will cope with both heavy clay and lighter sandy conditions. Avoid permanently waterlogged sites.
Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK and most of Northern Europe, requiring no winter protection once established.
Care & Maintenance
Watering: Water regularly after planting to help the plant establish. Once settled in, Hedera helix is notably drought-tolerant, particularly in shaded positions, and requires very little supplementary watering.
Feeding: An annual top-dressing of general-purpose fertiliser or a mulch of well-rotted compost in spring will encourage strong, healthy growth, though the plant will perform adequately even in poor soils without feeding.
Pruning: Prune in spring or early summer to control the size and spread of the plant and to keep growth looking neat and tidy. Use sharp secateurs or shears and cut back as hard as necessary — Common Ivy responds well to hard pruning and will regenerate vigorously.
