Planting & Care Guide
Position – Escallonia 'Apple Blossom' prefers full sun to partial shade. It thrives in sunny locations, where its flowers will be most prolific. In areas with hotter climates, partial shade can provide some relief during the hottest part of the day.
Soil – Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil. It is adaptable to most soil types, including loamy, sandy, or slightly acidic soil, but will perform best in soils that are slightly acidic to neutral.
Watering – Water regularly during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Once established, 'Apple Blossom' is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering. However, it will benefit from occasional watering during particularly dry spells.
Maintenance:
-
Pruning – Prune after flowering to shape the shrub and remove any dead or damaged wood. Light pruning will help maintain its compact form and encourage dense, bushy growth.
-
Mulching – Apply mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain a cool root zone.
-
Fertilizing – Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Escallonia 'Apple Blossom' pairs wonderfully with other summer-blooming plants like Lavender, Geraniums, or Penstemon, creating a beautiful contrast of colour and texture. It also works well with other evergreen shrubs such as Hebe, Pieris, or Boxwood, adding structure and year-round interest. For a more naturalistic look, combine it with ornamental grasses like Festuca or Pennisetum to enhance the soft, mounding growth habit. 'Apple Blossom' also complements bright, sunny plants like Rudbeckia, Echinacea, or Coreopsis, creating a cheerful and vibrant garden display. It is an ideal choice for hedges, mixed borders, or as a specimen plant, bringing colour and interest to your garden from late spring through summer.
