About Cupressus ley.Castlewellan Spiral 25 Litre Pot 120cm

× Cuprocyparis leylandii 'Castlewellan' – Castlewellan Gold Leyland Cypress | Striking Golden Evergreen for Hedging, Screening & Specimen Planting

× Cuprocyparis leylandii 'Castlewellan' – commonly known as the Castlewellan gold Leyland cypress – is one of the most ornamentally distinctive and widely admired cultivars of the Leyland cypress group. Originating from the famous arboretum at Castlewellan in County Down, Northern Ireland, this golden-foliaged form brings all the vigour, hardiness and adaptability of the Leyland cypress together with a brilliant warmth of colour that lifts it far above the ordinary. Where the species provides reliable green screening, 'Castlewellan' does the same – but with a luminous, golden-yellow brightness that catches the eye in every season and adds genuine ornamental value to whatever role it is asked to play.

Equally at home as a formal clipped hedge, a tall golden screen, a robust windbreak or a bold freestanding specimen, 'Castlewellan' is a versatile and hardworking conifer that delivers year-round structure, colour and shelter with minimal fuss. Its combination of pace, presence and golden brilliance makes it one of the most rewarding evergreen conifers available for UK gardens.

Habit & Appearance

Columnar, dense and gloriously golden. 'Castlewellan' develops a strongly upright, columnar to broadly conical habit, closely mirroring the natural form of the Leyland cypress but distinguished throughout by its remarkable foliage colour. The flat, feathery sprays of scale-like foliage are a vivid golden-yellow on the outer, sun-facing growth, graduating to a fresh yellow-green towards the interior of the plant. This creates a sense of depth and luminosity that is particularly striking in winter and early spring, when little else in the garden can match it for warmth and brightness. Growth is vigorous – typically 45–75 cm per year under good conditions – and the branching is naturally dense from ground level upwards, making it highly effective as a screen or hedge without the need for heavy intervention. Left unclipped, 'Castlewellan' develops into a handsome, large tree with a gently tapering silhouette that makes an impressive architectural focal point in larger spaces.

Growing Conditions

Adaptable, tolerant and best in sun. 'Castlewellan' thrives in a bright, open position in full sun, where its golden foliage develops its most vivid and intense colouring. In shadier aspects, the yellow tones become somewhat more muted and greenish, though the plant will still grow well and perform effectively as a screen or hedge. It is accommodating of most well-drained soils, including clay, loam, chalk and sandy soils, and is tolerant of both mildly acidic and mildly alkaline conditions. Like all Leyland cypress cultivars, it shows strong wind resistance, making it an excellent choice for exposed, coastal or open rural sites where shelter and screening are urgently needed. Avoid planting in permanently waterlogged or poorly drained ground, as prolonged wet conditions around the roots will cause stress and gradual decline.

Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK, withstanding hard frosts and cold winters without damage to foliage or structure.

Planting

Prepare the ground well and give a confident start. For hedging and screening, plant in a single row with approximately 60–90 cm between each plant, adjusting spacing according to specimen size and the speed of coverage required. Break up any compacted soil before planting and incorporate plenty of organic matter to encourage strong, rapid root establishment. Water thoroughly at the time of planting and continue to water consistently throughout the first growing season, particularly during warm or dry periods. Once established, 'Castlewellan' is largely self-sufficient and tolerates dry spells well, but attentive watering during the first year makes a significant difference to the pace and vigour of early growth. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to support lush establishment and encourage the best possible foliage colour.

Care & Pruning

Regular trimming keeps 'Castlewellan' at its most attractive and effective. For a formal hedge or privacy screen, trim two to three times during the growing season – broadly between April and September – to control height and spread, maintain an even, tidy surface, and build increasing density over time. As with all Leyland cypress cultivars, always cut into the current season's green-gold growth; 'Castlewellan' will not reliably regenerate from old brown wood, so avoid pruning hard into areas where foliage has already been lost. For a more informal or naturalistic planting, a single trim in late summer is usually sufficient to keep the plant well proportioned and tidy. When clipping a formal hedge, taking care to maintain a slight taper – wider at the base than at the top – ensures that light reaches all levels of the plant, preserving density and strong golden colour from the ground upwards.

Tip: Begin trimming young plants early in their life to develop a dense, well-filled framework from the base. Regular clipping from the outset produces a far thicker, more impenetrable hedge than one left unchecked and cut back hard at a later stage.

Perfect Uses

A golden conifer for many garden roles. 'Castlewellan' excels as a warm, golden boundary hedge that provides privacy and screening without sacrificing ornamental interest, a windbreak for exposed or coastal gardens, a noise-reducing barrier alongside busy roads or driveways, and a rich golden backdrop to mixed planting schemes. Its colour makes it particularly effective as a contrast hedge in combination with darker green conifers or mixed boundary planting. It can equally be grown as a bold freestanding specimen in larger gardens, where its height, density and year-round golden presence make a genuine landscape statement. In smaller gardens
