Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata' (Arizona Cypress) – A Striking, Narrow Evergreen Conifer with Silvery Blue-Grey Foliage

Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata', a refined columnar selection of the Arizona Cypress, is a bold and elegant evergreen conifer that brings striking vertical structure and attractive silvery blue-grey foliage to the garden throughout every season. Its strongly upright, pencil-like silhouette makes it an outstanding choice for creating dramatic focal points, formal avenues, or slender living screens where space is limited but impact is essential. Exceptionally tough and adaptable, this cultivar is well suited to a wide range of garden conditions, thriving in heat, drought, and exposed positions that would challenge many other conifers. Whether used as a solitary specimen to punctuate a planting scheme or planted in a row to form a stately architectural feature, 'Fastigiata' delivers year-round presence with impressive reliability and very little demand.

Habit & Appearance

Strongly columnar, fastigiate form. Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata' develops a distinctly narrow, upright habit, with branches held closely and tightly against the central stem to create a clean, pencil-like column. This disciplined silhouette is one of its defining qualities, making it immediately useful in formal and contemporary garden designs where strong vertical lines and precise structure are desirable. Its naturally self-maintaining form rarely splays or loses its shape, even as it matures, providing a consistently elegant profile from a young age.

Silvery blue-grey foliage. The fine, scale-like leaves are carried in dense, overlapping sprays that give the foliage a soft, feathery texture and a distinctive silvery blue-grey colouring. This cool, glaucous tone is present throughout the year, providing a fresh and refined quality that contrasts beautifully with warm-coloured planting partners and darker evergreen neighbours alike. The foliage has a pleasantly resinous, aromatic fragrance when brushed or handled, adding a sensory dimension that further enhances its garden appeal.

Year-round evergreen structure. As a fully evergreen conifer, 'Fastigiata' retains its foliage, colour, and architectural presence across all four seasons. Its contribution to the garden in winter — when many surrounding plants have lost their leaves and interest can be difficult to sustain — is particularly significant, offering a confident, living vertical accent that anchors the planting scheme through the colder months.

Growing Conditions

Position. Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata' thrives in full sun and performs best when given as much direct sunlight as possible. An open, sunny aspect encourages the densest foliage growth and brings out the most vivid expression of the characteristic blue-grey colouring. It is highly tolerant of heat, wind, and exposed conditions, and copes admirably in dry, sun-baked environments where many conifers would struggle. It is also a good choice for gardens in warmer, more continental climates, as well as sheltered coastal and inland positions throughout the UK.

Soil. This cultivar is notably adaptable and undemanding when it comes to soil, performing well across a broad range of types including light sandy soils, loams, and chalky or stony ground. It prefers a well-drained to freely draining medium with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and will not tolerate prolonged waterlogging, which can cause root stress and decline. Once established, 'Fastigiata' is highly drought-tolerant, making it an excellent option for drier, lower-maintenance gardens or areas where irrigation is limited.

Hardiness. Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata' is generally hardy across most of the UK, coping well with typical winter temperatures. Its origins in the arid mountain regions of Arizona give it a good degree of resilience to cold, frost, and temperature fluctuation. Young plants in colder inland areas will benefit from some protection from harsh frost and drying winter winds until fully established, after which they become considerably more self-sufficient and robust.

Care & Pruning

Watering. Water regularly during the first growing season to support good establishment and encourage the development of a strong, deep root system. Once settled in, 'Fastigiata' is highly drought-tolerant and requires only occasional supplementary watering during prolonged dry spells. As with all conifers, consistent overwatering or poorly drained conditions are far more likely to cause problems than periods of dryness, so always ensure excess moisture can drain freely away from the root zone.

Pruning. Cupressus arizonica 'Fastigiata' naturally maintains its tight, upright form with very little intervention, and heavy or regular pruning is rarely needed. If desired, light trimming in late spring or early summer can be carried out to neaten the outline, remove any damaged or wayward shoots, or maintain a particularly crisp formal shape. As with other cypress cultivars, avoid cutting hard back into old, brown wood, as the plant does not readily regenerate from mature bare stems and such cuts can leave permanent unsightly gaps in the foliage.

Feeding. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and sustain the vibrancy of the foliage. Established plants growing in reasonable soil conditions are not heavy feeders, but an annual spring application will encourage stronger, more vigorous growth and help maintain the characteristic blue-grey intensity of the foliage throughout the season.

Mulching. A layer of organic mulch applied around the base of the plant helps to conserve soil moisture during drier periods, moderate root temperature, and suppress weed competition. This is particularly beneficial during the establishment period and through summer dry spells. Keep the mulch clear of the trunk itself to maintain good air circulation and
