Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans Viridis' - Japanese Cedar

An elegant evergreen conifer with soft, feathery juvenile foliage that retains its fresh bright green colour throughout the year. Unlike 'Elegans', this form maintains its verdant appearance even in winter, creating a lush year-round presence.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Fresh bright green new growth emerges
  • Summer: Lush green feathery foliage creates soft texture
  • Autumn: Maintains bright green colour as other plants fade
  • Winter: Provides vibrant evergreen presence in winter garden

Key Features

  • Retains bright green colour year-round
  • Fully hardy to -20°C
  • Soft juvenile foliage unlike typical conifers
  • Develops attractive irregular pyramidal form
  • Excellent for year-round structure and colour

Perfect For

Specimen planting, evergreen structure in mixed borders, Japanese-inspired gardens, providing vertical accents, and year-round colour. The consistent green colour makes it valuable for creating reliable backdrops in planting schemes.

Growing Tips

Plant in moist, well-drained acid to neutral soil in sun or part shade. Prefers shelter from cold drying winds. Water well during establishment and in dry spells. Mulch annually to retain moisture. Minimal pruning required; lightly trim in spring if needed.

Looks Great With

Combines beautifully with ornamental grasses, ferns, Hostas, Bamboo, Japanese Maples, and shade-tolerant perennials. The consistent green provides excellent contrast to purple-leaved plants and golden conifers.

A distinctive evergreen conifer offering soft texture and reliable bright green colour throughout the year, perfect for adding architectural interest without seasonal colour changes.
