About Chamaecyparis Obtusa Nana Gracilis 10 Litre Pot

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis' – Hinoki Cypress

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis' is a beautifully sculptural dwarf evergreen conifer, prized for its rich, deep green foliage arranged in distinctive fan-like sprays that curl and twist with an almost artistic elegance. Slow-growing and naturally compact, this celebrated Hinoki cypress develops a gently irregular, conical to broadly pyramidal form over time, lending it a timeless, refined quality. A classic choice for Japanese-style gardens, rockeries, and containers, it brings year-round structure and quiet sophistication to any planting scheme.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Spring:
Fresh bright green growth emerges at the tips of the foliage sprays, offering a lively contrast against the deeper, more mature inner growth.

Summer:
The dense, shell-like fans of glossy dark green foliage create a rich, layered texture, maintaining a neat and characterful form throughout the warmer months.

Autumn & Winter:
Foliage remains evergreen and retains its deep lustrous colour through the colder months, providing excellent year-round structure and interest when many other plants have died back.

Structure & Form

  • Dwarf, slow-growing evergreen conifer

  • Conical to broadly pyramidal habit with a gently irregular outline

  • Rich, deep green foliage held in distinctive shell-like, fan-shaped sprays

  • Dense, layered texture with a sculptural, ornamental quality

  • Underside of foliage displays attractive silvery-white markings

An outstanding specimen plant that becomes more characterful and distinguished with age.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Japanese & Zen Gardens: A traditional and iconic choice, perfectly suited to calm, contemplative planting schemes.

  • Rockeries & Gravel Gardens: Its compact habit and sculptural form make it an ideal focal point among stones and gravel.

  • Mixed Borders: Provides year-round evergreen structure and deep green colour contrast alongside flowering shrubs and perennials.

  • Containers: Well suited to pots and planters on patios, terraces, and courtyards where its elegant form can be appreciated close up.

  • Small Gardens: Slow growth and naturally compact habit make it an excellent long-term choice for more limited spaces.

Growing Conditions & Care

Position:
Full sun to partial shade. Best foliage colour and density is achieved in a bright, open position with good light. Shelter from harsh, drying winds will help maintain the quality of the foliage sprays.

Soil:
Moist, well-drained, and slightly acidic to neutral soil. This Hinoki cypress thrives in fertile, humus-rich loam that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Good drainage is essential to prevent root problems.

Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a healthy root system. Once established, it is reasonably tolerant of drier conditions but benefits from consistent moisture during prolonged dry spells, particularly in summer.

Hardiness:
Fully hardy throughout the UK (approximately -20°C), making it a reliable long-term garden plant in most regions.

Pruning:
'Nana Gracilis' requires very little pruning. Its naturally ornamental habit develops without intervention, and hard cutting is best avoided as old wood does not regenerate reliably. Any dead, damaged, or crossing branches can be carefully removed in spring. Light tidying of stray shoots may be carried out if desired to maintain a clean outline.

Feeding:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for conifers in spring to support healthy growth and maintain rich foliage colour.

Mulching:
An annual mulch of composted bark or similar organic material around the base will help conserve soil moisture, regulate root temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch clear of the trunk to avoid any risk of rot.

Perfect Plant Combinations

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Nana Gracilis' combines beautifully with a wide range of plants to create thoughtful, layered planting designs.

  • Japanese Maples: The delicate, colourful foliage of Acer palmatum varieties provides a stunning seasonal contrast to the rich, evergreen texture of 'Nana Gracilis', creating an elegant, refined pairing.

  • Other Dwarf Conifers: Group with contrasting forms such as spreading junipers, rounded Picea or low-growing Abies varieties to create a varied and textural year-round conifer garden.

  • Ornamental Grasses & Ferns: Soft, flowing grasses such as Hakonechloa or delicate ferns complement the structured foliage sprays of 'Nana Gracilis', adding movement and a naturalistic quality.
