Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Ellwoodii' is a classic evergreen conifer beloved for its neat, columnar habit and attractive blue-grey foliage. The soft, feathery sprays of grey-green to steel-blue needles create a striking, upright column of colour and texture that earns this variety a place in gardens of all styles and sizes. Slow growing and reliably hardy, Ellwood's Lawson Cypress is one of the most popular and versatile conifers available for British gardens.
Seasonal Beauty & Growth
Spring:
Fresh new growth emerges with a particularly vivid blue-grey tone, refreshing the plant's overall appearance after winter.
Summer:
Dense, feathery foliage maintains a rich blue-grey colour, forming a tidy, upright column of cool-toned evergreen interest throughout the season.
Autumn & Winter:
As temperatures drop, the foliage often takes on a slightly steelier, more silvery-blue hue, providing standout structural interest when much of the garden is bare.

Perfect for Various Landscapes
Formal Gardens & Borders: The upright, columnar form provides classic architectural structure and works beautifully as a focal point or repeated accent plant.
Rockeries & Gravel Gardens: Compact and slow growing, 'Ellwoodii' fits naturally among rocks and gravel, adding height and contrast without overwhelming the scheme.
Containers & Patios: An excellent choice for large pots, adding year-round structure and colour to patios, courtyards, and entranceways.
Screening & Hedging: When planted in a row, the dense, upright habit creates an effective, attractive evergreen screen or informal hedge.
Small Gardens: Its slow growth rate and manageable size make it well suited to compact garden spaces where a reliable, low-maintenance evergreen is needed.
Growing Conditions & Care
Position:
Thrives in full sun or partial shade. The best foliage colour and densest growth is achieved in an open, sunny position. Avoid deep shade, which can cause the plant to become sparse and lose its characteristic blue-grey tone.
Soil:
Prefers moist, well-drained soil that is fertile and slightly acidic to neutral. Like most Lawson Cypresses, 'Ellwoodii' dislikes waterlogged conditions, so good drainage is essential. It will tolerate a range of soil types once established, including clay soils, provided drainage is adequate.
Watering:
Water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a strong root system. Once settled in, 'Ellwoodii' is reasonably drought tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture during prolonged dry spells, particularly in container growing.
Hardiness:
Fully hardy throughout the UK, tolerating temperatures well below freezing. Established plants are resilient in exposed and cold conditions, making this a dependable year-round garden plant.
Pruning:
Very little pruning is required. The naturally neat, columnar habit means 'Ellwoodii' is largely self-maintaining. If needed, lightly trim any wayward shoots in late spring or early summer to keep the shape tidy. Avoid cutting back hard into old, brown wood, as Lawson Cypress does not readily regenerate from bare stems.
Feeding:
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser formulated for conifers in spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage colour.
Mulching:
An annual mulch of well-rotted organic matter around the base helps to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. Keep mulch clear of the trunk to prevent rot.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Contrasting Foliage: The cool blue-grey of 'Ellwoodii' pairs beautifully with warm-toned or golden conifers such as Thuja plicata 'Stoneham Gold' or Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Pembury Blue' for a striking year-round display.
Heathers & Dwarf Shrubs: Underplant with Calluna or Erica varieties to create a classic heather-and-conifer combination that offers colour and texture across all seasons.
Ornamental Grasses: Combine with silver or blue-toned grasses such as Festuca glauca for a cohesive cool-toned planting that works especially well in gravel or Mediterranean-style
