Cercidiphyllum Japonicum

Katsura Tree

Cercidiphyllum japonicum – The Katsura Tree with Glorious Autumn Colour

Cercidiphyllum japonicum, commonly known as the Katsura Tree, is a beautiful deciduous tree admired for its heart-shaped foliage, graceful form, and exceptional autumn display. Famous for the sweet, candyfloss-like scent released by its fallen leaves, it is a striking feature tree for larger gardens and landscapes.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Young leaves emerge bronze-purple before maturing to soft green.

  • Summer: Blue-green foliage forms a rounded, elegant crown.

  • Autumn: Leaves turn spectacular shades of yellow, orange, pink, and red, releasing a sweet, caramel fragrance as they fall.

  • Winter: Bare framework offers attractive structure, especially when frosted or silhouetted.

Key Features

  • Stunning heart-shaped leaves – Seasonal changes bring colour and variety throughout the year.

  • Exceptional autumn display – Brilliant yellows, oranges, and reds, often with multiple colours on the same tree.

  • Unique fragrance – Fallen autumn leaves release a scent often compared to burnt sugar or candyfloss.

  • Graceful habit – Naturally forms a broad, rounded crown or can be multi-stemmed for a softer look.

  • Hardy and reliable – Thrives in UK gardens with minimal care once established.

Perfect For

  • Specimen planting – A standout tree for lawns or open spaces.

  • Woodland gardens – Works beautifully in naturalistic plantings and larger landscapes.

  • Autumn interest – Adds fiery seasonal drama and fragrance.

  • Multi-stem forms – Particularly effective in modern designs and mixed borders.

Growing Tips

  • Sun/Position: Best in full sun to partial shade.

  • Soil: Prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soil; avoid very dry conditions.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK.

  • Care: Minimal pruning required; water well during dry summers when young to establish deep roots.

Looks Great With

  • Other autumn performers – Acers, Liquidambar, and Nyssa create a fiery autumn palette.

  • Spring bulbs – Snowdrops, Crocus, and Narcissus enhance early-season displays beneath.

  • Ornamental grasses – Add softness and texture around the base.

  • Evergreen structure – Contrast with conifers or Hollies for year-round balance.

Cercidiphyllum japonicum is a truly special tree that combines graceful form, multi-season interest, and one of the most enchanting autumn displays of any ornamental tree. Its colour and fragrance make it unforgettable in both private gardens and larger landscapes.
