Carpinus betulus ‘Lucas’ – Elegant Upright Hornbeam for Structured, Space-Saving Planting
Carpinus betulus ‘Lucas’ is a refined, upright cultivar of the classic hornbeam, prized for its slender columnar form, dense foliage, and strong architectural presence. More narrow and formal than the species, ‘Lucas’ is ideal for avenues, urban gardens, driveways, and formal landscapes where space is limited but vertical structure is desired.
With its attractive seasonal colour changes, hardy nature, and naturally tidy growth, ‘Lucas’ is a sophisticated choice for designers seeking structure, elegance, and low-maintenance reliability.
Why Grow Carpinus betulus ‘Lucas’?
1. Graceful Columnar Shape
‘Lucas’ forms a tight, upright crown with strong vertical lines – ideal for narrow spaces, formal avenues, or as a statement feature.
2. Lush Green Foliage & Autumn Colour
Fresh mid-green leaves emerge in spring, creating a dense canopy through summer, then turn golden-yellow to copper in autumn before falling to reveal graceful winter structure.
3. Space-Efficient & Versatile
Retaining a width of only 2.5–3.5 m even at maturity, ‘Lucas’ is perfect for urban gardens, driveways, and tighter planting sites.
4. Tough, Hardy & Reliable
Adaptable to many soils and climates, ‘Lucas’ tolerates wind, frost, pollution, and pruning, performing well in both city and rural settings.
5. Low-Maintenance Elegance
Neat by nature, it requires little pruning and offers decades of strong structure and beauty with minimal care.
