Camellia japonica – Classic Evergreen Shrub with Spectacular Late Winter to Spring Blooms

Camellia japonica is one of the most beloved and enduring flowering shrubs in cultivation, celebrated worldwide for its magnificent blooms, lustrous evergreen foliage, and elegant, long-lived character. Flowering from late winter through to mid-spring, it delivers a breathtaking display of colour at a time of year when the garden is only just beginning to stir into life.

The flowers of Camellia japonica are extraordinarily varied, ranging from single and semi-double forms to fully formal doubles and anemone-centred blooms. Colours span a rich palette from pure snowy white and the softest blush pinks through to vivid rose, warm salmon, and deep, velvety crimson-red, with many varieties producing beautifully striped or bi-coloured flowers. Each bloom is perfectly formed and long-lasting, making the camellia one of the most refined flowering plants for temperate gardens.

Beyond its spectacular floral display, Camellia japonica contributes outstanding year-round structure and beauty. The foliage is dense, glossy, and a rich deep green, forming a handsome backdrop to the blooms and providing an attractive, polished appearance throughout all twelve months. The naturally upright to rounded, bushy habit makes it an excellent specimen shrub, and it responds very well to growing in large containers, bringing elegance to patios and sheltered courtyards alike.

Hardy, reliable, and long-lived, Camellia japonica becomes more floriferous and characterful with every passing year, gradually developing into a substantial and magnificent shrub. It is equally suited to woodland gardens, acid-loving borders, and formal settings, and its versatility and enduring appeal have made it a cornerstone of gardens throughout the UK and beyond.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Winter

Plump flower buds develop against the glossy evergreen foliage, hinting at the spectacular display to come. The rich dark green leaves provide handsome structure during the coldest months.

Late Winter–Spring

The main flowering season arrives, with beautifully formed blooms opening in a wide range of colours from white through pink to deep red. The display can last for many weeks, particularly in a sheltered position.

Summer

Lush, glossy evergreen foliage provides a bold, verdant presence in the garden. New growth flushes emerge in fresh, lighter green, adding interest and vigour to the plant.

Autumn

The dense evergreen canopy remains attractive and polished as new flower buds quietly form in preparation for the following season's display.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Partial shade or dappled shade is ideal. Avoid positions that receive direct early morning sun in winter, as this can damage frozen flower buds. A sheltered spot protected from cold, drying winds will help prolong and preserve the flowering display.

Soil: Moist, humus-rich, acidic and well-drained soil is essential. Camellia japonica will not thrive in alkaline or waterlogged conditions. Incorporate generous amounts of ericaceous compost when planting, and apply a deep mulch of leaf mould or composted bark annually to retain moisture and maintain acidity.

Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout most of the UK, though flower buds may be susceptible to damage from late frosts and cold winds in exposed positions.

Watering: Water regularly during the establishment period and during dry spells, particularly in late summer when next season's flower buds are forming. Where tap water is alkaline, use collected rainwater wherever possible.

Feeding: Apply a specialist ericaceous or camellia fertiliser in spring after flowering to support healthy growth and encourage the development of flower buds for the following season.

Pruning: Camellia japonica requires very little pruning and is best left to develop its natural form. If shaping or size reduction is required, prune immediately after flowering has finished and before the new growth begins. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches at the same time.

Container growing: Plant in a quality ericaceous compost and ensure the container has good drainage. Water and feed regularly, and
