Camellia japonica ‘Debutante’
A graceful spring favourite with romantic pink blooms
Soft, romantic and full of charm, Camellia japonica ‘Debutante’ is one of the most beloved camellias, treasured for its exquisite pastel flowers and graceful evergreen form. From late winter through spring, this elegant shrub produces an abundance of large, soft shell-pink blooms, each with a sumptuous peony-like fullness. Their delicate colour stands out beautifully against the deep, glossy green foliage, offering a vision of early-season splendour when much of the garden is still waking from winter.
‘Debutante’ is well-suited to the UK climate, particularly when planted in acidic, humus-rich soils and positioned in light dappled shade. This helps protect its petals from browning while allowing the buds to open freely. With an eventual height and spread of 2–3 metres, it forms a dense, rounded shrub that provides year-round structure, making it a reliable choice for mixed borders, woodland gardens, or for growing in a large pot close to the house.
Its soft pink flowers make it a natural partner for spring bulbs, hellebores and other shade-loving shrubs like azaleas or pieris. Whether enjoyed as a stand-alone specimen or as part of a planting scheme, ‘Debutante’ lives up to its name with a display that feels poised, graceful, and unforgettable.
Does the height include the pot?
No, we measure from the top of the pot to the tip of the plant except for some of the instant planted screens, in this case it will be stated in the description
