About Buxus Ball 12 Litre Pot 40cm
Buxus sempervirens, commonly known as Box or Common Box, is one of Britain's most beloved and enduring evergreen shrubs. Prized for centuries in formal garden design, it produces dense, compact growth clothed in small, glossy, dark green leaves that hold their colour and form throughout the year. Whether clipped into crisp hedges, sculpted into topiary shapes, or allowed to develop a naturally rounded habit, Box brings timeless structure and elegance to any outdoor space.
Slow-growing and exceptionally long-lived, Buxus sempervirens is a reliable choice for gardeners seeking year-round definition and a classic aesthetic that suits everything from traditional knot gardens to contemporary courtyard planting schemes.
Habit & Appearance
Evergreen foliage and dense structure. Box produces small, oval, leathery leaves in a deep, lustrous green, arranged densely along its stems. Left unpruned, it develops into a naturally bushy, rounded shrub that can reach 2–5 metres in height over many years. Its naturally compact, multi-branching growth habit makes it exceptionally responsive to clipping, allowing it to be shaped into virtually any form — from low edging and formal hedges to spheres, cones, spirals, and elaborate topiary.
Year-round presence. As a fully evergreen species, Box retains its foliage in all seasons, providing structure and greenery even through the coldest winter months. In spring, small, inconspicuous but pleasantly scented yellowish-green flowers appear, which are attractive to bees and other early pollinators.
Growing Conditions
Position. Buxus sempervirens is remarkably adaptable and will thrive in full sun, partial shade, or even full shade — making it one of the most versatile shrubs available to gardeners. It performs equally well against north-facing walls or in open, sunny borders, and tolerates the dry, shaded conditions often found beneath trees.
Soil. Box grows best in fertile, well-drained soil. It is tolerant of a range of soil types, including chalk, loam, and clay, provided drainage is adequate. It dislikes prolonged waterlogging, which can lead to root stress. Improving heavy soils with grit or organic matter before planting will encourage strong establishment.
Hardiness. Fully hardy throughout the UK and most of northern Europe, Buxus sempervirens is well suited to our climate and will reliably overwinter without any special protection in all but the most exposed situations.
Care & Pruning
Watering. Once established, Box is relatively drought tolerant. During the first growing season, water regularly during dry spells to help the plant develop a strong root system. Thereafter, supplementary watering is only needed during prolonged dry periods.
Feeding. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser or a feed formulated specifically for Box in spring to support healthy growth and maintain rich, dark foliage. A light top-dressing of well-rotted compost around the base of the plant each year also helps retain moisture and improve soil fertility.
Pruning. For formal hedging and topiary, clip Box once or twice a year — ideally in late spring after the main flush of growth, and again in late summer to maintain a sharp, defined outline through winter. Use sharp, clean shears or topiary scissors for precision work. For informal planting, little pruning is needed beyond removing any dead, damaged, or wayward growth as required.
Pest & disease awareness. Box is susceptible to Box blight (a fungal disease) and Box tree caterpillar. Maintaining good airflow around plants through regular, careful pruning helps reduce the risk of blight. Inspect plants regularly and treat any infestations of Box tree caterpillar promptly using an appropriate biological or chemical control.
