This charming native evergreen fern brings texture and year-round greenery to shaded areas. With its distinctive ladder-like fronds arranged in neat rosettes, it adds elegant structure to woodland gardens and shaded borders with minimal maintenance required.
The evergreen fronds remain attractive throughout winter, providing valuable structure. In summer, separate upright fertile fronds emerge from the centre of the rosette, adding interesting vertical accents. Fresh new fronds unfurl in spring.
Woodland gardens, shaded borders, damp areas, rock gardens, and naturalising in wild areas. Ideal for planting under trees, alongside streams, or in north-facing borders where many other plants struggle.
Plant in acidic, humus-rich soil that stays reliably moist. Prefers full or partial shade. Mulch with leaf mould or ericaceous compost annually. Keep well-watered during dry spells. Remove any damaged fronds in spring before new growth emerges.
Combine with other shade-loving plants such as hostas, primulas, bluebells, and woodland bulbs. Plant alongside other ferns, heucheras, and hellebores for a layered woodland planting. Works beautifully near water features.
A delightful native fern that brings elegance and structure to shaded areas while supporting local wildlife.
