About Blechnum Spicant 2 Litre Pot

Blechnum spicant – Hard Fern

Blechnum spicant, known as the Hard Fern, is a beautifully distinctive native evergreen fern that brings year-round structure and deep green texture to shaded gardens. Its most striking feature is its two-tiered frond arrangement: flat, ladder-like sterile fronds spread outward in a neat rosette at the base, while taller, upright fertile fronds rise from the centre, giving the plant an elegant and architectural quality. Fully hardy, slow to establish but long-lived, and delightfully low-maintenance, Hard Fern is a true classic for naturalistic and woodland-inspired planting schemes.

Habit & Appearance

A fern of real character. The sterile fronds are dark, glossy green with a distinctive ladder-like arrangement of paired, strap-shaped pinnae along either side of the midrib — neat, precise, and deeply attractive. In summer, separate fertile fronds emerge from the heart of the rosette, standing more upright and bearing spores on their undersides. The overall habit is clump-forming and tidy, making it equally at home as a specimen plant or used en masse for groundcover in shaded settings. Being evergreen, it contributes valuable colour and structure through the winter months when much of the garden lies dormant.

Growing Conditions

Shade and moisture are key. Blechnum spicant thrives in partial to full shade and is particularly well suited to the dappled conditions found beneath trees and shrubs. It prefers moist, acidic, humus-rich soil and will perform best where the ground stays reliably cool and damp. It is naturally found on moorland, in rocky woodland, and along stream banks in the British Isles, so it is very much at home in a wide range of shaded, moisture-retentive situations. It is not well suited to dry, chalky, or waterlogged soils, and will struggle in exposed, sunny positions.

Care & Maintenance

Minimal attention needed once established. Hard Fern is an undemanding plant that requires little in the way of routine care. In late winter or early spring, remove any old, tired, or frost-damaged fronds to make way for the fresh new growth that unfurls as temperatures rise. Mulching annually with leaf mould or ericaceous compost will help maintain soil moisture and acidity, and support the plant's long-term health. During prolonged dry spells, particularly in the first season after planting, ensure the soil does not dry out completely. No feeding is necessary in well-prepared, organic-rich soils. Blechnum spicant is generally pest- and disease-free, making it a reliable and rewarding choice for low-maintenance planting.

Garden Uses & Combinations

Versatile in shaded and naturalistic schemes. Hard Fern is ideally suited to woodland gardens, shaded borders, north-facing beds, and planting alongside streams or ponds. It naturalises beautifully beneath deciduous trees and combines well with other shade-tolerant plants. For a richly layered woodland-style planting, pair it with hostas, hellebores, foxgloves, bluebells, and wood anemones. Combine with other ferns such as Dryopteris or Athyrium for contrasting frond textures, or plant alongside rhododendrons and azaleas that share its preference for acidic conditions. A wonderful choice for wildlife gardens, providing shelter and habitat for invertebrates and small creatures.
