Azalea ‘Golden Eagle’ is a striking deciduous azalea known for its vivid orange-toned flowers and elegant upright habit. A classic Knaphill hybrid, it produces bold clusters of trumpet-shaped blooms in late spring, bringing fiery colour to woodland gardens, borders, and mixed shrub beds.

Appearance

This azalea forms a bushy shrub with fresh green leaves that emerge in spring and often turn yellow tones in autumn, giving a second season of interest. The flowers open from pinkish buds into large orange to orange-red trumpet blooms, typically appearing from May to June.

Size and Habit

  • Height: around 1.5–2.5 m at maturity

  • Spread: around 1.5 m

  • Habit: upright, bushy deciduous shrub

Growing Conditions

Azaleas thrive best in conditions that mimic woodland edges:

  • Position: partial shade or dappled shade (tolerates sun if soil stays moist)

  • Soil: moist, well-drained acidic (ericaceous) soil

  • Shelter: protected from cold, drying winds

  • Planting tip: avoid planting too deeply as azaleas have shallow roots.

Garden Uses

  • Woodland and shade gardens

  • Mixed shrub borders

  • Specimen plant for spring colour

  • Containers using ericaceous compost

This cultivar has also received the RHS Award of Garden Merit, recognising its reliability and garden performance.
