Aster × frikartii 'Mönch' – An Exceptional Late-Summer Perennial with Luminous Lavender-Blue Daisies
Aster × frikartii 'Mönch' is widely regarded as one of the finest perennials in cultivation, and it is easy to see why. This outstanding Frikart's aster produces an extraordinarily long succession of large, lavender-blue, daisy-like flowers with warm golden-yellow centres, blooming from midsummer well into autumn. Forming an upright, clump-forming habit with sturdy stems and attractive, rough-textured foliage, 'Mönch' brings elegance and reliability to any planting scheme. Beloved by pollinators and gardeners alike, it is a must-have perennial for borders, cottage gardens, and wildlife-friendly spaces.
Exceptionally Long Flowering Season – Blooms continuously from midsummer through to late autumn, providing months of colour long after many other perennials have finished.
Stunning Lavender-Blue Flowers – Large, elegant daisy-like blooms with vibrant golden centres create a striking and sophisticated display.
Outstanding Pollinator Value – A magnet for bees and butterflies, offering a rich and sustained nectar source throughout the season.
Excellent Mildew Resistance – Unlike many asters, 'Mönch' is notably resistant to powdery mildew, maintaining attractive, healthy foliage throughout summer and autumn.
Hardy & Dependable – Fully hardy and reliably perennial, returning year after year with minimal fuss to deliver a consistently impressive performance.
Position – Thrives in full sun, which encourages the strongest flowering and most compact growth. A warm, open spot in a border or cottage garden is ideal. Will tolerate very light shade, though flowering may be slightly reduced.
Soil – Prefers moderately fertile, well-drained soil. It performs best when drainage is good over winter, as it dislikes sitting in waterlogged conditions during the colder months.
Watering – Water regularly during the first season to help plants establish. Once settled, 'Mönch' is reasonably drought-tolerant, though watering during prolonged dry spells in summer will help to sustain its long flowering display.
Aster × frikartii 'Mönch' combines beautifully with other late-season perennials such as Rudbeckia, Echinacea, and Helenium, creating a warm and vibrant late-summer border. Its cool lavender-blue tones contrast wonderfully with the rich yellows and oranges of Hemerocallis and Kniphofia earlier in the season. For a refined, naturalistic planting, pair with ornamental grasses such as Stipa gigantea or Molinia, or soften the scheme with Salvia nemorosa, Nepeta, and Verbena bonariensis for a classic cottage garden feel.
