A charming native British fern with delicate evergreen fronds featuring contrasting dark stems and bright green leaflets that bring grace to shady spots.

Seasonal Highlights

The rosettes of fine-textured fronds provide year-round interest, with fresh new growth emerging in spring. The distinctive purple-black stems create an attractive contrast against the small rounded bright green pinnae throughout all seasons.

  • Delicate evergreen fronds
  • Distinctive dark purple-black stems
  • Bright green rounded leaflets
  • Compact rosette-forming habit
  • Native British species

Perfect For

Ideal for planting in wall crevices, rock gardens, and between paving stones. Perfect for shady borders, woodland gardens, and containers. Excellent for naturalising in damp shady areas and bringing wildlife value to gardens.

Growing Tips

Plant in shade or partial shade with well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil. Particularly good in limestone areas. Water regularly until established, then requires minimal attention. Excellent for growing in cracks and crevices where other plants struggle. Remove any damaged fronds in spring.

Looks Great With

Pair with other ferns like Polystichum setiferum and Dryopteris for textural variety. Combines beautifully with Epimedium, Primula, and Cyclamen in shady plantings.

A refined native fern that adds delicate texture and evergreen interest to challenging shady spots.
