Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Variegatum’ – Soft Variegation for All-Season Interest
Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Variegatum’ is a graceful evergreen shrub prized for its light, airy appearance and soft variegated foliage. The small, gently undulating leaves are deep green at the centre with creamy-white margins, creating a shimmering effect that catches the light beautifully in both sun and shade.
This variety has a naturally upright yet softly bushy habit, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance hedging, informal screening, or as a bright accent in mixed borders. In late spring, it produces small, purple-brown flowers with a subtle, sweet scent – a charming detail often discovered up close.
‘Variegatum’ thrives in most well-drained soils and copes well in coastal areas, where its tolerance to wind and salt makes it a reliable choice. Whether grown as a single specimen, clipped into shapes, or allowed to form a natural screen, it remains attractive throughout the seasons. Its light foliage pairs beautifully with darker greens, purples, or deep reds, helping to lift and balance planting schemes.
