Papaver or Poppies

Who isn't familiar with the poppy! Simple divided green leaves and beautiful saucer shaped flowers that sometimes have ruffled petals that make them even more attractive, in late spring and early summer. They are also very attractive to insects. There is a lot of history that goes with poppies as it is said that they were found growing in Egyptian tombs and also the cultural symbol of Crete as they are known as the "poppy goddess". People also grew poppies as they believed if they did they would have good crops.

How to Grow and Look after Your Papaver

Plant in rich soils in sun or part shade. Once they have finished flowering it is best to cut back when the flowers are gone as the foliage tends to look tatty.
