Hydrangea Arborescens Strong Annabelle 4 Litre Pot

Hydrangea arborescens 'Strong Annabelle' is a outstanding selection of the North American native smooth hydrangea, loved for its enormous, pure white pompom flowerheads that put on a spectacular display from midsummer through to autumn. Unlike the original Annabelle, 'Strong Annabelle' has been bred with noticeably sturdier stems that hold the massive blooms upright even in wind and rain, making it a far more reliable garden performer. As the season progresses, the flowerheads fade to a beautiful soft green and then parchment-brown, extending the ornamental interest well into winter. This is a deciduous shrub with fresh, mid-green foliage that emerges in spring, providing a lush backdrop to the spectacular blooms. Hardy, vigorous and easy to grow, it suits a wide range of garden styles from cottage to contemporary.

Growing conditions

Position: 'Strong Annabelle' thrives in a sheltered position in full sun to partial shade. It performs particularly well with morning sun and some afternoon shade in hotter climates, which helps to preserve the colour of the flowers for longer. Avoid exposed, windy sites where possible, even with its stronger stems.

Soil: Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Like all hydrangeas, it appreciates consistent moisture and will benefit from the incorporation of generous amounts of organic matter at planting time. It tolerates a range of soil pH and, unlike the mophead hydrangeas, its flower colour is not affected by soil acidity.

Hardiness: Fully hardy and reliably cold tolerant, making it suitable for growing throughout most of the UK and Ireland. It dies back in winter and regrows strongly from the base each spring.

Care

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during the first growing season while the plant is establishing and during prolonged dry spells in summer. A generous layer of mulch applied around the base will help to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Feeding: Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring as new growth begins. Avoid excessive nitrogen-rich feeds, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers. A mulch of well-rotted garden compost or leaf mould each spring will also help to enrich the soil and feed the plant naturally.

Pruning: 'Strong Annabelle' flowers on the current season's new growth, which means it responds very well to a hard annual prune. Cut all stems back to just above a low pair of healthy buds in late winter or early spring, typically to around 30–50 cm above ground level. This encourages the plant to produce vigorous new shoots that will carry the largest, most impressive flowerheads. The dried flowerheads can be left on the plant over winter to provide structure and interest, and to offer some degree of frost protection to the emerging buds below.
