Widely regarded as one of the finest witch hazels, offering exquisite fragrant pale yellow winter flowers and stunning autumn colour.
From late winter into early spring, bare branches are clothed in masses of spidery pale sulphur-yellow flowers with an intense sweet fragrance that carries on the air. In autumn, the large soft leaves turn brilliant golden-yellow before falling.
Exceptional as a specimen shrub in mixed borders, woodland gardens, or positioned near seating areas and pathways where the winter fragrance can be fully appreciated. Perfect for adding scent and colour in the quietest months.
Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil in sun or partial shade; shelter from cold winds. Mulch generously with organic matter. Minimal pruning required; remove only damaged wood after flowering. Water during dry periods, particularly when young. Avoid root disturbance once established.
Beautiful with winter companions such as Helleborus niger, Galanthus, Cyclamen coum, and Mahonia. Underplant with Epimedium or spring bulbs for extended interest.
An outstanding shrub that fills the winter garden with colour, fragrance and elegance.
