A magnificent witch hazel offering a double season of interest with richly coloured fragrant winter flowers and spectacular autumn foliage.
From late winter to early spring, bare branches are adorned with masses of spidery coppery-red fragrant flowers that withstand frost. In autumn, the large leaves transform into a fiery display of orange, red and golden-yellow before falling.
Outstanding as a specimen shrub in mixed borders, woodland gardens, or near pathways where the winter fragrance can be appreciated. Ideal for adding structure and seasonal interest to larger gardens.
Plant in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil in sun or partial shade; sheltered from strong winds. Mulch annually with organic matter. Requires minimal pruning; remove only damaged or crossing branches after flowering. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in first few years.
Stunning underplanted with Helleborus, Galanthus, Cyclamen coum, and Epimedium. Complements evergreens such as Sarcococca and Mahonia for winter interest.
An exceptional shrub that brings fragrance, colour and elegance to the winter and autumn garden.
