Frangula or Buckthorn

It's most well-known for its role in supporting wildlife, especially as a food source for caterpillars of various butterfly species.

Frangula brings numerous benefits to both your garden and the local ecosystem. Its ability to attract butterflies, birds, and pollinators makes it a valuable wildlife-friendly plant, while its adaptability to moist soils and low-maintenance nature make it easy to grow. Its spring flowers, decorative berries, and autumn foliage provide year-round interest, making Frangula an excellent choice for naturalistic gardens, hedging, and woodland settings. Its compact size, environmental benefits, and role in supporting native biodiversity make it a sustainable and rewarding addition to any garden.

Where To Site Your Frangula

  • Erosion Control: Frangula's dense root system makes it useful for stabilizing soil in erosion-prone areas. Planting it along slopes, riverbanks, or other areas vulnerable to soil erosion can help prevent soil loss while supporting local ecosystems.
  • Hedging and Screening: Frangula is a popular choice for hedging and screening due to its dense foliage. It can be grown in mixed hedges alongside other native species like hawthorn and hazel, providing shelter for wildlife and creating a natural-looking boundary or screen in the garden.
  • Naturalistic and Woodland Gardens: Frangula fits well into naturalistic and woodland gardens. It can be planted along the edges of woodlands, in wildlife gardens, or in more informal settings where its natural growth habit enhances the landscape.

How To Grow Buckthorn

  • Soil: Frangula prefers moist, well-drained soil, but it is highly adaptable and can thrive in clay, loamy, or sandy soils. It is particularly suited to wetter conditions.
  • Light: Alder Buckthorn grows best in full sun or partial shade, but it can tolerate more shaded conditions in woodland settings. However, it flowers and fruits more prolifically in sunnier positions.
  • Nitrogen Fixing: Like other members of the Rhamnaceae family, Frangula helps improve soil quality by fixing nitrogen. This characteristic can benefit other plants growing nearby, especially in poor soils.
  • Watering: Although it prefers moist soil, Frangula is fairly drought-tolerant once established. In dry periods, especially when young, occasional watering will help it thrive.
  • Pruning: Little pruning is required, but light trimming can be done in late winter or early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged wood.
  • No Need for Fertilizers: Frangula grows well without the need for added fertilizers or chemical treatments, supporting more sustainable gardening practices. It thrives naturally in nutrient-poor soils, making it a good choice for gardeners looking to reduce chemical inputs.
