Catalpa bignonioides Nana

Dwarf Inidian Bean Tree

Catalpa bignonioides 'Nana' – Compact Dwarf Indian Bean Tree

Catalpa bignonioides 'Nana' is a distinctive, slow-growing ornamental tree with a naturally rounded crown of lush green foliage. Unlike the larger Indian Bean Tree, this dwarf form rarely flowers or sets pods, making it neat, tidy, and perfect for smaller gardens and urban landscapes.

Seasonal Highlights

  • Spring: Fresh, large, heart-shaped leaves emerge, creating bold texture.

  • Summer: Dense, dome-shaped crown provides dappled shade and strong architectural presence.

  • Autumn: Foliage turns soft yellow before falling, leaving an elegant winter silhouette.

  • Winter: Bare branches maintain a neat, rounded framework that provides structure in the garden.

Key Features

  • Compact and slow-growing – Typically reaches 3–5m, making it ideal for smaller spaces.

  • Naturally rounded crown – Forms a dense, dome-shaped head without pruning.

  • Large, bold leaves – Heart-shaped foliage offers striking texture and lush summer greenery.

  • Low maintenance – Rarely flowers or produces seed pods, keeping it tidy.

  • Hardy and reliable – Withstands urban conditions, wind, and pollution.

Perfect For

  • Small gardens – A perfect specimen tree where space is limited.

  • Patios and courtyards – Adds shade and bold foliage in confined areas.

  • Formal plantings – Symmetrical shape suits structured designs.

  • Lawns – Works beautifully as a standalone feature tree.

Growing Tips

  • Sun/Position: Prefers full sun to partial shade.

  • Soil: Adaptable to most fertile, well-drained soils.

  • Hardiness: Fully hardy across the UK.

  • Care: Minimal pruning needed; remove dead or crossing branches in late winter if required. Water during prolonged dry spells while young.

Looks Great With

  • Grasses and perennials – Contrast its bold leaves with airy textures.

  • Formal evergreens – Box, Yew, or Privet enhance its symmetry.

  • Hydrangeas or Hostas – Shade-loving companions that thrive beneath its canopy.

  • Ornamental cherries – Combine for seasonal contrast in blossom and foliage.

Catalpa bignonioides 'Nana' is an elegant, compact tree that delivers structure, shade, and bold foliage with very little effort. A perfect feature tree for smaller gardens, it combines dramatic form with dependable, low-maintenance growth.
