Rhus typhina ‘Tiger Eyes’ – Golden Foliage with Fiery Autumn Drama
Rhus typhina ‘Tiger Eyes’ is a dazzling twist on the classic Stag’s Horn Sumach, offering the same bold architectural presence but with a fresh, luminous twist. In spring, finely divided leaves unfurl in a brilliant chartreuse-yellow, gradually deepening to warm gold through summer. The delicate, fern-like texture dances in the breeze, catching the sunlight and glowing like a living lantern in the garden.
By late summer, the tree produces upright clusters of velvety, crimson fruit, which stand proudly above the foliage and provide both structure and wildlife interest. As the year turns, the golden canopy transforms into a burning display of scarlet, orange, and rich amber – one of autumn’s most breathtaking finales.
More compact than the species, ‘Tiger Eyes’ is perfectly suited to smaller gardens, urban courtyards, and mixed borders, where its sculptural form and seasonal colour can be fully appreciated. It thrives in most soils, is drought-tolerant once established, and needs minimal care beyond occasional shaping in winter.
