Edgeworthia grandiflora – Winter’s Fragrant Glow with Exotic, Silky Flowers

Edgeworthia grandiflora, also called Paperbush, is a captivating deciduous shrub prized for its remarkable floral display and delightful fragrance that heralds the coming of spring. Flowering in late winter to early spring, it produces clusters of tubular, golden-yellow blooms that look almost otherworldly, with a soft, silky texture reminiscent of handmade paper — hence its common name.

Beyond its floral charm, Edgeworthia offers attractive, large, lance-shaped leaves that provide lush green foliage through the growing season. In autumn, the foliage may develop subtle shades of yellow or bronze before dropping for winter dormancy.

Growing up to 2 metres tall and wide, Edgeworthia thrives best in sheltered, partly shaded spots with moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Its early blooming flowers provide vital nectar for pollinators when few other plants are in flower, adding ecological value to its ornamental appeal.

Why Choose Edgeworthia grandiflora?

  • Striking Winter Flowers – Bright yellow, fragrant blooms appear in late winter to early spring.

  • Unique Silky Texture – Flowers have a delicate, paper-like appearance.

  • Attractive Foliage – Large leaves create lush greenery in summer.

  • Early Nectar Source – Supports pollinators when flowers are scarce.

Planting & Care Guide

Position: Prefers sheltered, partial shade to protect flowers and foliage.

Soil: Moist, well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter.

Watering: Keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells.

Feeding: Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support growth and flowering.

Pruning: Minimal pruning required; remove dead or damaged stems after flowering.

Design & Planting Ideas

  • Ideal for winter and early spring interest in mixed shrub borders.

  • Use in woodland or shady garden areas for naturalised effect.

  • Pair with early bulbs like snowdrops and crocuses for layered bloom.

  • A great choice for wildlife gardens, attracting early pollinators.
