Stachys byzantina (syn. Stachys lanata) ā Lamb's Ear for Soft Silver Foliage
Stachys lanata, now more commonly known as Stachys byzantina, is a much-loved evergreen perennial, famous for its beautifully soft, woolly silver-grey leaves that resemble the ears of a lamb. Its tactile foliage makes it one of the best plants for sensory gardens and family-friendly planting schemes.
The dense mats of velvety foliage provide outstanding year-round texture and contrast, particularly when planted alongside green-leaved shrubs and flowering perennials. During summer, upright stems rise above the foliage carrying spikes of small pink to purple flowers that attract bees and other pollinating insects.
Its spreading, ground-covering habit makes it ideal for the front of sunny borders, edging pathways, gravel gardens, and Mediterranean-style planting schemes. The silver foliage also reflects light beautifully, helping to brighten planting areas and create contrast within the border.
Thriving in full sun, Stachys performs best in free-draining soil and is highly drought tolerant once established. It dislikes waterlogged conditions, particularly during winter, making good drainage essential for long-term success.
Low maintenance and easy to grow, it requires only occasional tidying to remove old leaves and spent flower stems.
Soft, tactile, and wonderfully versatile, Stachys byzantina is an excellent choice for adding silver foliage and year-round interest to the garden.
