Salix × erythroflexuosa – Twisting Grace and Winter Glow
Salix × erythroflexuosa, also known as the Twisted Golden Willow, is a living sculpture in the garden – a tree that delights in all seasons. In spring and summer, its narrow, glossy leaves emerge on characteristically spiralled and contorted golden stems, creating a light, airy canopy that shimmers in the breeze.
As autumn approaches, the foliage turns warm yellow before falling to reveal the tree’s true winter glory – a framework of twisting, golden stems that glow in the low sunlight. This striking silhouette adds structure, texture, and a touch of drama to even the bleakest winter days.
A vigorous grower, Salix × erythroflexuosa is ideal as a specimen tree in lawns, near water, or as part of a mixed border where its year-round beauty can be appreciated. It thrives in full sun and moist soil, though it will tolerate a range of conditions. With minimal maintenance – just an occasional prune to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth – it will reward you with decades of charm.
