Phyllostachys nigra, commonly known as Black Bamboo, is renowned for its striking black canes that create a dramatic contrast against its green leaves. This unique colouring makes it a standout in any garden.

Perfect for hedging or as a stand-alone feature, Phyllostachys nigra can reach heights of 4-7 metres.

Plant in well-drained soil with access to full sun or partial shade. Regular feeding and watering, particularly in containers, will help maintain its striking appearance and healthy growth.

Black Bamboo is an eye-catching clump-forming variety with a graceful arching habit. Its canes start green and mature to a mottled dark brown or black. Reaching heights of 4-8 meters, this bamboo is ideal for creating a dense hedge for privacy, windbreaks, or adding an exotic flair to your home or business. The vibrant contrast between the lush green foliage and the rich, dark canes creates a stunning, eye-catching hedge that brings dramatic beauty to any landscape. 

Where should I site my Phyllostachys? 

Plant it in well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. To propagate, divide the bamboo clumps. Feed the bamboo with a general-purpose granular fertiliser in late spring and summer and refresh the mulch layer regularly. 

Consider investing in a soaker hose to help keep your plants well-watered without having to think about it, especially during hotter weather.

Growth and Pruning 

Since this bamboo variety grows slightly faster, it will require more frequent pruning to prevent it from becoming invasive. 

To keep the bamboo manageable and healthy, remove weak, dead, or damaged canes down to ground level throughout the year and clear debris from the base. Enhance the appearance of the canes by removing lower foliage, either by snapping offside branches or cutting them with secateurs.

No, we measure from the top of the pot to the tip of the plant except for some of the instant planted screens, in this case it will be stated in the description

How long does delivery take?

Most orders are delivered in just a few days, Smaller items are often sent with Parcelforce on a next day service, Larger items should allow up to 10 days due to the size of the items they often have to be sent on our own transport.

Where will you leave my plants?

We will leave your order at the front of your property, Parcelforce may
leave your items in a safe place if you let us know, Pallet couriers
will require a flat hard surface to deliver to, no gravel or soil, a
driveway or parking spot would be best. Most importantly Deliveries by
pallet courier will require access for a large truck (bin lorry sized)
to get near the delivery point. Deliveries sent on our own transport may come in a small van or larger truck.
