Phormium ‘Pink Stripe’ – Bold Elegance in Blush Tones

Phormium ‘Pink Stripe’ is a striking evergreen perennial, prized for its upright, sword-like leaves boldly striped in shades of dusky pink, deep burgundy, and olive green. This colourful New Zealand Flax offers architectural form and vibrant foliage that lasts year-round, making it a standout feature in mixed borders, contemporary designs, or container plantings. Its dramatic vertical lines and warm, rosy tones lend a unique elegance to any garden setting.

Seasonal Beauty & Growth

Spring:

  • New leaves emerge with vibrant tones of pink and green, forming a vertical, fan-like clump.

  • The warm colour tones bring early-season interest and contrast to fresh spring foliage and bulbs.

Summer:

  • Throughout summer, ‘Pink Stripe’ continues to provide bold foliage colour and structure, glowing in the sunlight and catching the eye from a distance.

  • In ideal conditions, mature plants may produce tall flowering spikes with tubular, reddish-brown blooms that attract birds and pollinators.

Autumn:

  • The rich pinks deepen slightly with cooler temperatures, adding a refined warmth to the autumn landscape.

  • Its strong form holds its presence, contrasting beautifully with fading perennials and autumnal foliage.

Winter:

  • In milder climates, ‘Pink Stripe’ remains evergreen, offering architectural structure and colour even in the depths of winter.

  • In colder areas, outer leaves may get frost-tinged but generally recover with spring regrowth.

Structure & Form

  • Height & Spread: Typically reaches 100–150 cm in height with a spread of 75–100 cm.

  • Form: Upright and fan-shaped with tall, sword-like leaves that create strong vertical lines.

  • Growth Habit: Clump-forming and moderately fast-growing, with a neat and tidy habit.

Perfect for Various Landscapes

  • Contemporary Gardens: Its bold, clean lines and warm colouring work beautifully in modern, minimalist planting schemes.

  • Accent Plantings: A stunning feature in borders or island beds where its dramatic foliage stands out.

  • Containers & Courtyards: Perfect for pots, where its colour and form shine year-round on patios or balconies.

  • Coastal Gardens: Tolerant of salt-laden winds, ‘Pink Stripe’ thrives in exposed coastal positions.

Growing Conditions & Care

  • Position: Best in full sun, which enhances its pink variegation. Will tolerate light shade, though foliage colours may soften.

  • Soil: Prefers fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid overly wet or poorly drained conditions.

  • Maintenance: Very low-maintenance. Remove any damaged leaves in spring to refresh the clump. Tolerates dry spells once established.

  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA zones 8–11. In cooler climates, protect with mulch or overwinter container-grown plants in sheltered spots.

  • Propagation: Can be divided in spring once mature for more plants or to refresh older clumps.

Why Choose Phormium ‘Pink Stripe’?

Phormium ‘Pink Stripe’ is the perfect choice for gardeners seeking dramatic colour and structure with minimal upkeep. Its rich pink and burgundy tones bring warmth and sophistication to planting schemes, while its strong, upright form adds vertical interest. Whether in borders, pots, or architectural groupings, ‘Pink Stripe’ delivers lasting impact throughout the seasons.

Perfect Plant Combinations

  • Grasses: Pair with blue-toned grasses like Festuca glauca or soft, flowing types like Stipa tenuissima for textural contrast.

  • Perennials: Combine with bold blooms such as Helenium, Salvia, or Crocosmia to complement its warm tones.

  • Succulents: Use alongside architectural succulents like Agave, Echeveria, or Aloe in gravel gardens or dry borders.

  • Shrubs: Surround with silver-leaved or dark-foliage shrubs like Pittosporum, Lavandula, or Senecio for sophisticated contrast.

  • Annuals: Add bright or trailing annuals like Calibrachoa, Verbena, or Nemesia in containers for a seasonal boost.

Phormium ‘Pink Stripe’ is a confident, colour-rich plant that adds instant flair to any setting. With its dramatic upright form and glowing pink foliage, it brings both beauty and structure to the garden—perfect for year-round interest with minimal effort.
