Nandina domestica ‘Gulf Stream’
Compact, colourful, and evergreen, Nandina domestica ‘Gulf Stream’ is a superb choice for year-round interest in the garden. Often called heavenly bamboo (though not a true bamboo), this elegant shrub is prized for its ever-changing foliage, which shifts through the seasons in a constantly evolving display of colour.
In spring, fresh bronze and copper-tinted leaves emerge, maturing to a refined mid-green in summer. As autumn arrives, the foliage transforms again, taking on fiery tones of red, orange, and burgundy that intensify through winter, making it one of the brightest shrubs in the colder months. Unlike many varieties, ‘Gulf Stream’ remains compact and dense without becoming leggy, forming a neat dome that rarely needs pruning.
Its fine, lacy leaves bring a soft, almost fern-like texture that contrasts beautifully with bolder evergreens, while in summer small white starry flowers may appear, followed by clusters of red berries if conditions are right. Perfect for containers, small gardens, or mixed borders, this variety is also wonderfully low-maintenance, thriving with minimal attention once established.
