Planting & Care Guide
Position: Mahonia media 'Charity' thrives in partial to full shade, making it ideal for shaded garden spots or woodland areas. It can tolerate some sun but blooms best in more shaded conditions.
Soil: Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It is adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay, loamy, and sandy soils, as long as they are well-draining.
Watering: Water regularly when newly planted to establish a strong root system. Once established, Mahonia media 'Charity' is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent watering during dry spells to ensure healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
Maintenance:
Pruning is minimal but may be required to shape the plant or remove any dead or damaged branches. Pruning should be done after the blooming period to maintain the shrubβs tidy appearance.
Mulching around the base helps to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots from temperature extremes. Apply a layer of mulch in early spring to help regulate soil temperature.
Fertilizing is not necessary unless the soil is poor in nutrients. A light application of balanced fertilizer in early spring can promote healthy growth and support vibrant blooms.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Mahonia media 'Charity' pairs beautifully with other woodland plants like Hostas, Astilbe, and Ferns, creating a lush, shaded garden display. For added color contrast, combine it with plants like Heuchera (Coral Bells) or Bleeding Heart (Dicentra), whose vibrant foliage and delicate flowers complement the bold structure of the mahonia. It also looks stunning when used alongside other evergreen shrubs like Rhododendron or Pieris (Andromeda), enhancing the year-round appeal of your garden.
