How to Grow and Care for Your Leucanthemum ‘Ooh La Lacreme’
-
Soil – Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil that is rich in organic matter. It can tolerate a variety of soil types as long as drainage is good.
-
Light – Grows best in full sun, where it can receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It can tolerate light shade, especially in warmer climates, but blooming may be reduced.
-
Watering – Water regularly, particularly during dry spells, but be careful not to overwater as this can lead to root rot. Once established, ‘Ooh La Lacreme’ is fairly drought-tolerant.
Maintenance:
-
Mulch & Feed – Apply mulch around the base in early spring to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Fertilize lightly with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season to encourage healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
-
Deadheading & Cleanup – Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong blooming and keep the plant looking neat. Once flowering has finished, cut back the plant to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage a second round of blooms later in the season.
-
Division – Divide every 2-3 years to maintain vigor and prevent overcrowding. This is best done in early spring or fall, when the plant is not in bloom.
Perfect Plant Combinations
Leucanthemum ‘Ooh La Lacreme’ pairs beautifully with other sun-loving perennials like Echinacea, Salvia, and Lavender, where its crisp white flowers add a fresh, elegant contrast to the warmer tones of pinks, purples, and reds. In a cottage garden, it looks stunning alongside Geranium, Penstemon, or Achillea, creating a soft, romantic display. For a more dramatic effect, combine it with deep purple or dark red flowers, such as Astilbe or Phlox, to make the white blooms pop. ‘Ooh La Lacreme’ also works well in combination with ornamental grasses like Miscanthus or Pennisetum, whose airy foliage contrasts beautifully with the plant’s bold flower spikes. If you’re looking to create a timeless, elegant look, pair it with other classic white flowers like Lobelia, Campanula, or Gaura for a harmonious and graceful garden design.
