Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bouquet Rose' is a classic, deciduous shrub prized for its spectacular mophead flower clusters that open in soft pink and deepen to rich rose tones as the season progresses. A well-loved cottage garden favourite, this hydrangea brings generous colour and lush, bold foliage to the garden from summer through to autumn, and the dried flowerheads provide interest well into the cooler months.

Habit and appearance

Rounded, bushy form. 'Bouquet Rose' develops into a dense, mounding shrub with broad, glossy mid-green leaves. Its large mophead flowerheads are composed of masses of florets in soft pink to deep rose, with flower colour influenced by soil pH — more acidic soils tend to shift blooms toward blue-purple tones, while alkaline conditions encourage warmer pinks and reds. The flowerheads are long-lasting and make outstanding cut flowers, fresh or dried.

Growing conditions

Prefers a sheltered position with morning sun and afternoon shade. This hydrangea thrives in a spot protected from harsh afternoon sun and drying winds, which can scorch the large leaves and stress the flowers. It grows well in both garden beds and containers. A humus-rich, moist, well-draining soil is ideal. Incorporating compost or organic matter into the planting site will greatly benefit establishment and ongoing performance. Mulching around the root zone helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.

Care

Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Hydrangeas have high moisture requirements during the growing season and will wilt quickly in dry or exposed conditions. Deep, consistent watering is preferable to frequent shallow watering, encouraging a strong root system. Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring to support vigorous growth and flowering.

Pruning

Prune lightly to maintain shape and encourage flowering. 'Bouquet Rose' flowers on old wood, so hard pruning will significantly reduce the following season's floral display. Deadhead spent flowerheads in late winter or early spring, cutting just above a healthy pair of buds. Remove any dead, damaged or crossing stems at the same time. Light tidying rather than heavy cutting will keep the shrub productive and well-shaped year after year.
