Clerodendrum trichotomum var. fargesii, commonly known as Harlequin Glorybower or Farges’ Harlequin Glorybower, is a deciduous shrub or small tree belonging to the Lamiaceae (mint) family. It is native to China and Japan and is admired for its ornamental qualities, especially in gardens and landscape settings.

Key Features:

  1. Size & Growth Habit:
    • This plant typically grows to a height of 3–6 meters (10–20 feet) with a similar spread, forming an open, rounded shape.
    • It has an upright and somewhat spreading growth habit, making it an excellent specimen or accent plant in gardens.
  2. Leaves:
    • The leaves are large, ovate (egg-shaped), and opposite on the stem.
    • They are soft-textured, dark green on top, with a rough texture, and they emit a distinctive, pungent aroma when crushed.
    • In autumn, they sometimes turn a muted yellow colour before dropping.
  3. Flowers:
    • The plant produces highly fragrant, white tubular flowers in late summer (usually from August to September).
    • The flowers are borne in loose, showy clusters and have an extended calyx that can be green or pinkish, adding to their decorative appeal.
    • The flowers attract butterflies and bees, making it a great choice for pollinator-friendly gardens.
  4. Fruit:
    • After flowering, blue or metallic turquoise berries develop, which are held in striking, star-shaped, bright red calyces.
    • The contrast between the red calyx and blue fruit is one of the most eye-catching features of the plant, persisting into the fall and early winter.
    • These fruits are loved by birds, adding wildlife interest to the garden.
  5. Bark:
    • The bark is light brown or gray, and its rough texture adds winter interest when the plant is leafless.

Growing Conditions:

  • Light: Clerodendrum trichotomum var. fargesii grows best in full sun to partial shade. Too much shade, however, can result in reduced flowering and poorer overall form.
  • Soil: It prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to a range of soil types, including those with clay or sandy compositions. It thrives best in rich, loamy soils.
  • Water: Regular watering is necessary during the establishment period, but once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant.
  • Hardiness: This variety is hardy making it suitable for temperate climates.
  • Maintenance: Minimal pruning is required, usually to shape or remove any damaged or dead branches. It can spread via suckers, so gardeners may need to control its growth in certain settings.

Landscape Uses:

  • Ornamental Shrub: Its showy, fragrant flowers and striking fruits make it ideal for mixed borders or as a specimen plant.
  • Wildlife Gardens: With its fragrant blooms that attract pollinators and berries that feed birds, it is a great addition to wildlife-friendly gardens.
  • Cottage Gardens: The loose, natural form of this shrub complements the informal style of cottage gardens.
